JHK Congrats on your first wild NC trout! Great looking fish. Hope to see some more pictures of your next couple of trout. Good luck on the rest of your trip.

I had the same type of experience with suwannee river bass in Florida many years ago. I was fishing Wakulla river south of Tallahassee. Super clear spring fed water. I was trying to catch all of the black bass species and still needed the Suwannee river and Guadalupe bass. I had several fish follow my baits. The most action came on a baby bass fluke. I had two separate suwannee grab the bait and just as I got them within hand reach they both just let go of the bait. They were never hooked and just had the baits held in their mouth. Any time I went to a smaller bait to get a better hook set, I only got follows and no strikes. So still no suwannee bass. I haven't gone for guadelupe. Still two species short. Now you have me intrigued to try for a trout slam in Arkansas.

Ham Sounds like a great after work fishing trip. Congrats on the 3/4 Norfork slam!

I caught these two smallies while targeting trout just below the Hwy 19 bridge by Greer. It was Jan. and I have heard that the smallmouth move up towards the spring at that time. Would not be surprised if you get on them in Aug. Good luck. 10" smallmouth. 14" smallmouth.

Marcus Great first walleye! I still haven't caught one yet. A bit jealous. Congrats on your catch! Probably was a decent meal. Didn't look like a C&R photo op.

I'm always up for trophy minnow photos. Good luck!

We decided on chanterelle soup this evening. We followed this recipe: http://honest-food.net/2014/07/21/chanterelle-soup-recipe/ I had to minced and sweat a pound of chanterlles and two shallots while my wife made the soup base. And it's done. I just had a salad with this soup with a yellow tomato from the garden (finally). My wife had brie and crackers with her soup. We really liked this recipe. Now we have to go out and get some more mushrooms. Got more rain today, hopefully able to find them again this week.

I will have to try the carnitas, pork and turkey both sound good. My wife would love them. I have been thinking about this recipe for some time but hadn't had enough chanterelles (yes again with those guys) to make it. Made a roulade with chicken breast that we butterflied and flattened as thin as possible. I seasoned inside of the chicken then added a filling made with sauted chanterelles, minced dried apricots, minced onions, and garlic. I browned the chicken rolls on both sides and placed them on a tray and into a 375 deg oven to cook the centers. I deglazed the pan with more minced onions, water (chicken stock probably would have been more flavorful, didn't have any), and a 1/4 cup of brandy then burned off the alcohol and added cream and small amount of butter to the sauce. Served them with brussel sprouts and butternut squash. (pictured before I added the sauce)

Salvage the Summer Mushrooms?
Johnsfolly replied to Johnsfolly's topic in Mushrooms and other wild edibles
Thanks BH and good luck to you and your better half. -
Had chanterelles and scrambled eggs this morning. (Camera was still a little sleepy and foggy eyed this morning.) Sauted the mushrooms with garlic and minced onion. Scrambled eggs from our easter eggers, dominiques, and are bantum hens. Salt, pepper and a spice mix. shared the plate with my wife. I had mine with multigrain wheat toast and cantaloupe.

Salvage the Summer Mushrooms?
Johnsfolly replied to Johnsfolly's topic in Mushrooms and other wild edibles
Eureka!!! Thar is gold in thar hills!! Was going out looking for chanterelles and small furry guys on some forest land. This was an area that I found a bunch of old chants last year. I turned the corner and found the following. I realized that I was undergunned to adequately take care of this sign. Had to call in backup. So reluctantly Follysbeterhalf came to help out. With knives and basket in hand we got down to business. I have never found chants in this abundance before. so I'm pretty excited. Many of these guys were fairly large. With the large number of mushrooms, we left a lot of the small ones to try to keep this site active this year and hopefully into the next year and beyond. Pretty happy with our collection. Hope others are finding some shrooms this year. -
My team has been in playin pergatory the last couple of years. Not doing as well as last year but headed in right direction after beating cubs.

Dan looks like a great time on Stockton. Was that a flathead at the beginning of the video?

Shortnose Gar vs. Juvenile Alligator Gar?
Johnsfolly replied to Haris122's topic in Conservation Issues
Haris122 - The alligator gar has a broader head that is somewhat spade shaped. the snout is the narrowest part of the head The distance from the tip of the snout to the end of the mouth is shorter than the distance from the end of the mouth to the back of head. The shortnose gar has a head that narrows then slightly expands as you get to the end of the snout. The distance from the tip of the snout to the end of the mouth is greater than the mouth to the back of the head. Also the alligator gar has two rows of teeth in the upper jar if you are willing to look in its mouth. Sent you a PM with some more info. -
Salvage the Summer Mushrooms?

Ffer - I have heard that the chorals are edible, but have never tried them. Usually they are dry like twigs when I find. them. Have you had them and are they worth trying. Gavin - Those white ones are definitely Amanitas. Probably the best examples that I have ever seen with the intact veil. So I took their picture. -

Dan - chanterelles are definitely one of my favorite mushrooms to eat. Good luck hunting them when you get out. Let us know how you do. -
Chief - Have you checked to see if you have the Australian photo setting switched on your camera? JPB - can't wait to see what the pork looks like coming out or your smoker.

Thank you to all of you that serve. It's an unappreciated job and you put you life on the line everyday. Stay safe and thanks again.

Won't even comment on the gravity defying cans in Chief's house. However, it does seem like a better way to store can goods. In college I worked in the Chinese restaurant in Wilmington NC for the summer. There were never any mystery meats showing up at the back door.Even that I know that they do not like to throw out anything, I still ate their food and it was great. It was a family business and they were very friendly and demanding at the same time. I realized that I would never be as strong as Sidney. That man was only about 5'2" and about 115 lbs, but could throw around 100 lb bags of rice or cabbages. He had a wooden Bruce Lee practice dummy in the back and I never wanted to get him mad. Only worked for them one summer, but did get to the point that I knew the words to Billy Joel's "uptown girl" in Chinese before I left to go back to school.

Is it just me who thinks that its pretty funny that the "fish" that each of us on this thread either represents the thread or what we like to fish for. I'm at Plains Killifish, which is definitely one the minnow species I would like to catch. Oneshot is at Black Redhorse and MOPanfisher you are at Black Buffalo. Seems funny to me, but then again it just may be late.

Salvage the Summer Mushrooms?
Johnsfolly replied to Johnsfolly's topic in Mushrooms and other wild edibles
Went out with Follysbetterhalf tonight on a conservation area that I had not visited in several years hoping to get in a nice hike and also find some edible mushrooms. We did start finding many non-edibles or non-descript little brown and white ones like these. Then they got a little more interesting. Up to this point we were pretty high above the creek bottoms where I thought that we would have better luck on chanterelles. We started getting lower and my wife found the first chanterelles right in the pathway (sorry about the poor picture, must have been my shroom fever made me shake the camera). These guys looked like they were up for a couple of days already. Hunted along both sides of the pathway and covered a pretty big area and found several more. Pretty excited and definitely will go back out the next several days. Also found this bolete and will have to id it before we do anything else with it. Definitely stayed away from these guys. Got a little scared even taking the picture We had a great time. Saw a couple of deer and lots of different wildflowers. Now it raining again. If I can't fish the flooded streams, I can at least find some mushrooms. -
I do like all of AB's shows. I have seen both versions of Feasting on Asphalt and most if not all episodes of Good Eats. Now I am addicted to Cutthroat Kitchen. They should do a home cooks episode or four.

Oneshot - do you pressure cook the carp before you can it?

Last trotline crappie fell to a goldfish. This one was caught using a bluegill bait. Nice size fish. Harrisonville angler catches state-record white crappie Congratulations to Austin Campbell on breaking the state record by catching a 2-pound, 1-ounce white crappie with a trotline on an irrigation pond in Cass County. CASS COUNTY, Mo. – The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) reports Austin Campbell of Harrisonville became the most recent record-breaking angler in Missouri when he hooked a white crappie in a Cass County irrigation pond on a trotline. The new “alternative method” record fish caught by Campbell on May 23 weighed 2-pounds, 1-ounce with a length of 15 1/2 inches. Campbell’s recent catch broke the previous state-record of a 1-pound, 5-ounce white crappie caught on a trotline in May this year. “Once my buddy and I pulled the fish up into the boat, we were in shock,” Campbell said. “We couldn’t believe we caught a nice size crappie. We both thought it was very rare to catch a fish like that on a trotline.” Campbell was using bluegill for bait to try to catch catfish, but instead he caught the record breaking white crappie. Campbell added he didn’t know there were state records for catching fish like that on a trotline. “I didn’t know there was a category for catching crappie on a trotline until I saw an article on the Missouri Department of Conservation’s website,” he said. “I saw the record size and knew we had a shot at beating it.” Campbell added he was just thankful that he and his buddy kept the white crappie after they caught it. MDC staff verified the fish using a certified scale in the town of Harrisonville. Once MDC gave him confirmation he had a state record, Campbell said he and his friend were super excited and shocked. “We’ve always dreamed of catching a big fish and having some type of record, but we never ever thought it would happen for real. We are super excited and can’t wait to get back out on the water to catch more fish.” Campbell added he plans on having the state-record white crappie mounted. Missouri state-record fish are recognized in two categories: pole-and-line and alternative methods. Alternative methods include: throwlines, trotlines, limb lines, bank lines, jug lines, spearfishing, snagging, snaring, gigging, grabbing, archery, and atlatl. For more information on state-record fish, visit the MDC website at http://short.mdc.mo.gov/Zk9.
