Wrench, I would bet it is a young northern water snake. AKA cottonmouth/ moccasin. Harmless tadpole eater,crawdad trap heart stopper.

Thanks Phil for all that you do ! I get to fish on the Manistee, Ausable and one of your favorites the Pere Marquette all summer long, but my Michigan buddies think you live on the best trout fishery in America! I agree, but won't tell them that. I like brookies, black flies and monster mosquitoes. See you next winter! -
Quick Google search says 3 possibly 4 bite deaths in MO going back to the 30's. Last one in James River the young man was too tuff to go for treatment. I have spent thousands of hours on Mo and Ark rivers and streams and have never had a problem. I have also seen people kill every snake near the water in Canada, Michigan, Minnesota etc. because they were Cottonmouths...(There are zero) Like wrench says, lots of friendly water snakes get the ax because of faulty ID.

Heck, I found a mushroom. 1 Since I am leaving for the left coast in the A.M. for a couple weeks my fridge is bare. When I get back I head north for the summer. So... I stopped by local pizza joint tonight and had them add my prize to the pie. I plucked the slices off the top and they were wonderful. Shame how many kids have never seen a moral.

I've found that very few people will say no to kids fishing. Just knock on a few doors. When you do get permission make sure you close all gates,etc. and have the boys or girls say thanks to the landowner. A lot of places are posted for liability reasons. Just ask.

Mitch, my brother went to school in China. Married a beautiful gal from there... In Manhattan . Anyways, when you get ready to send those out for sale or test I am taking that new SIL fishing this summer In Michigan. They look amazing! Sell me some ASAP!

We catch them in the shallower lakes and backwaters in Michigan and not on purpose. They would destroy old style nets every time. I don't know how the newer nets would hold up and I don't plan on finding out. They are devil fish. The groans and cussing that starts when that trophy Smallmouth or Northern turns into a dogfish would make a sailor blush.

Must be the miniature beer can with a treble hook. Or the famous floating titty with weedless #2. I have them both,we trade them back and forth when somebody is skunking up the boat.

Ness, Billet.... I spend my time between north Smithville/ Stockton/ Taney in the cool months.. Great looking warm beds Billet! Ness is right on laying back, it almost always snows once after Easter. I have picked Morals and killed Turkeys with snow on the ground.

Anyways, Ness is eating baby bunny and fresh asparagus for Easter supper.

Each his own. I've been fishing for over 50 years all over the world. China, Russia, Ireland etc. I have found that I don't care for fishing on the Gulf or the West coast much. Enjoy! -

The rain yesterday changed a lot of things here, went from brown to green in hours. It's going to be another tall grass year I think. Like Ness said, it's starting to bloom fast. Makes the easy picking hard. I have a good mushroom stick but my knees are really getting bad. -
