  1. I saw that couple the other day in Ste Gen, really. Lots of frugal old Germans around here.
  2. Any walleye? Plan a trip with wife in two weeks.
  3. Looks like rain staying over my way, glad I could help.
  4. Getting to old to drive 5 hours to Tn. Gonna have to settle with our supply of smallies.
  5. Acorns poison livestock. We kept grazers out of timber in fall. Probably why squirrels taste like they do, all they eat is nuts. This will be the second year of poor acorn crop, they are in the fields eating grass. But the meat was good last year and should be this year also.
  6. Alot has to do with what the deer has been eating. Years that they are feeding primarily on acorns, I think they taste like crap. But when they are feeding in the fields on grass due to poor acorn crop, they are as good as beef. Rutting bucks never turn me on as good food. But a young doe or button buck when feeding on grass is like lean beef. Sliced thin and deep fried is good appetizer. Mushrooms and onions over rice is another favorite of mine also. Backstraps make good steaks. Since the telecheck, my deer get processed in the first hour after the kill. No dragging into town like the old days. Cleaned and cool quickly.
  7. Never Bass fished the river. Spent some time years ago from Meramec Spring to Scotts Ford chasing trout. But I had never bass fished it till today. Took a father and son team out in the boat that lives there and was wanting to see what we could do out of a jet boat. It was 45 this morning on the ramp and you could see your breath. Had a good solid day on the water from 7:30 till 3 and had fish on all day. They were not busting it. No topwater at all. All swim baits and plastics. Chartreuse was the color of the day for me. Many 12 -15, lots of dinks, a solid 18, and this nice 19 1/2" beast. Fall is here and I have found new water.
  8. And that "smell" would permeate the flesh. Sounds pretty nasty to me.
  9. I have never taken or wanted to eat a squirrel that looked like that. Did the burn the fur off them??
  10. Tried to book a cabin on 11 pt for a weekend coming up, all were rented by squirrel hunting group. Wonder if same bunch will invade Oregon Cty?
  11. Each agent in assigned counties that is posted on the MDC website with the contact number. You can get in touch direct and bypass the 800 game theft number. That will get you more results faster.
  12. Be sure to razz him for bringing the glo-bug fly to Mo. If things work out, I will be on my way to Stockton or Pomme that weekend. Wrench probably needs a honey fix.
  13. I used to dump the old bottle caps out of Grandpa's store soda machine on the ground in front. Made good pavement. The best Mountain Dew came out of that machine there. That woodpile fed the potbelly stove in the middle of it that kept it warm.
  14. That looks like fun. Was already planning on a trip up that area next weekend. Been a while since I have seen ole Charlie. Who are the usual vendors?
  15. Thats a pig that eats like a pig.
  16. My kids and grandkids know what my stuff does and will be happy to put it to use when I am gone.
  17. They made glass thicker back then. Probably why the label torn, glanced off something when they tossed it. And we have had many "100" year floods in the past 20 years, probably flushed out of some junkpile somewhere.
  18. Notice the rust on the can, that was before aluminum cans. It best you paddled up to see it, I got a dose of seed ticks last weekend hiking down the mowed trail to Morgan and Blue Springs at Narrows.
  19. At a boy.
  20. They are like cats, kill everything they see for fun. I have seen them dragging snakes around at Duck Creek for years. That was the first place they misplaced them and they took hold fast. No real natural predators. They opened them to trapping and fur price for them was high. Then all fur dropped to nothing and no real interest in trapping them. About the only thing aquatic I have not seen affected is turtles, hard shell natural defense. But the softshells are getting scarce around here.
  21. Yep, construction of shovel ready jobs will just hurt the supply issue further. Don't break your garage door, its 16 weeks out now in production and 75 to 100 percent more than the first of Jan.
  22. What does it look like wet?
  23. What I am seeing on Otter infested waters is the lack of snakes and frogs. And we do run across otters while fishing. A few weeks ago we run into a pack of them while drifting the 11 pt. Floating like snakes thru a riffle. A riffle I could not take the jet thru. The area they were in was more fishless that it was a few years ago when we fished it. They may have spooked them all out before we got there. They did not dispatch the young Dystemper Coon that was crippling along the bank just above them. I guess they are smart enough to avoid a scroungy looking coon in daylight near water. But, I did not see a river snake the last 2 trips over there. And the St Francois, Current Rivers are the same way. Snakes are rare where they used to hang off every limb.
  24. I have to from time to time, run outta room to store them. As long as I don't run out of chances to buy them, I am happy......
