  1. Self wicking planter tub? So I have been reading and watching you tube on self watering planters using a wick or capillary action to water your plants. Several links for using double or stacked five gallon buckets. I know it all depends on height you are trying to water and what your dirt or potting soil will draw upwards. I am sure there is a formula for this but I am a hack and we will see what these will do. My tomatoes and peppers do root clear to the bottom of my tubs so I may have to water direct to soil at first until roots get deep enough and once that happens I should be golden. I use the containers cattlemen feed supplement to the heard. These things are everywhere and I have found if you ask the farmers have some stashed somewhere on the farm. You need two of them for each planter. I am making a few for a test and see how it goes. For mine I am using standard sewer drain pipe and inch and a quarter water pipe. Depending on how your tubs slide together will depend on how deep your well will be. I cut three pieces of the sewer pipe for the upper tub to rest on the lower tub. Then a section of the same pipe and draw a circle and cut it out of the upper bucket and slide it in. This will be your wicking chimney of sorts. Drill lots of little holes in this all the way around. Then lots of holes in the bottom of the upper bucket bottom. Section your watering pipe and cut an angle on one end. Hole in upper tub to insert it, See where we are going yet? Will need a side drain hole in bottom tub approx. where the inner upper tub rests on your spacers, Put your inner in your outer . Then push your holey wicking center pipe tight to the bottom, Fill with your potting mix. Pack tight in wicking pipe and then to the top, So in theory you water down the small filling pipe and it fills the bottom, when full it will drain out the side hole. Water will wick up to plant. We will see how it works this summer. If it works it will save allot of water in BilletHeadVille. I got two made this afternoon. First one the well will hold a little over four gallons of water. The second one I made to hold five gallons even to the overflow, BilletHead
  2. Nice Dayrk, Just getting out makes it a successful trip in my book of life. Doing so with a family member is icing on the cake, BilletHead
  3. Mr. Chance, Don't know much except the Blackberries. The ones I had I just trained the new shoots up and then back into the ground to reroot. As far as pruning you should do that now. The shoots that produced berries last season need to cut off at ground level and pulled out, Billethead

A bunch of the tubs have been moved and area raked smooth. Bought a pallet of cypress mulch and a new layer put down where tubs should be. Have lettuce up in one starting tray, Just finished up seeding another with diferent lettuce and a few tomato seeds, BilletHead

    What's Cooking?

Guess some have never heard of a feast for the eyes?, Sous vide loin. 137 for three hours. in the vac bag with the meat was thyme and sliced garlic plus a nice bug spoonful of the retained goose fat when I did the confit venison roast. When pulled from the bath it was seared on a bed of hot coals that had some white oak splits on them. Sides of fried potatoes and onions that had asaigo cheese in it. A nice salad. BilletHead

That puts it over the top! Still think it's a bummer you are moving but now you have new opportunities to pursue. BilletHead
  14. I just never did drink much. Did not have a beer until my mid twenties. Used to drink a beer a day with a meal. Down to maybe two or three adult beverages a week maybe. A fancy drink maybe one a month. I could see more if I got into trying some that you guys post. Peaking my interest , BilletHead

  19. Nice! I have a good supply of shad raps Quill. I don't pick up the spinning gear much anymore but when i do the first thing I tie on is a shad rap. This time of the year I have done real well on walleye on the river run, BilletHead
  20. Decided to visit a pond for awhile today, East wind, cold water. It was 26 this morning in BilletHeadVille when I awoke. Started warming up nicely so i grabbed the long rod and a few streamers. Have not fished this location for a couple of years. Talked to farmer the other day to make sure it was still ok to go. Yes was his answer. Also told me there was a boat there if I wanted to use it. I was not going to use it but after walking to the pond this is what I saw , I about cracked up. I sat on the side and the whole boat twisted as I tied on a streamer. With the cold water I knew my retrieve would need to be slow to no movement. I stripped some line and dunked my fly into the water to get good and wet. Stripped some more and went to casting. Fly hit the water and slowly sank. I would strip and then pause like working a jerk bait. The pause was two to four seconds long. Then a hit and miss. I let it sit and another hit and hook up. One down and first fish. Not big but I don't need big to make me happy, And I repeated this process again and again from the same place. Gently sloping bank and I would guess the fish were coming out of four to fife foot of water. Seventeen fish between ten and fourteen inches long came from the same place. I missed several and they wanted it slow. I watched the floating line on the pause to detect the bite. They were hitting so light i would not see it. When I did the next strip is when I felt the fish on, They liked the little streamer engulfing it at times, The bite quit here and I began to move around the pond. Caught one in another spot. Fly fishing a non manicured pond presents problems, Line management at your feet can be a pain in the rear. I think a stripping basket would work good here. No more fish around the pond until I completed the distance around and back to original spot. I tied on an articulated worm and made a few casts. Missing another and then a catch. Worn good for one I then changed back to the minnow streamer. A few more casts and more fish. Last fish and finished count. Ham would be proud of me as I used my clicker, This pond is packed with many, many fish this size. Owner encourages us to keep fish or throw them on the bank. Hard for me to do that but may take a fillet knife next trip. I do know that larger ones show up time to time. Several years ago I caught an eight pounder out of this place, BilletHead
  21. It took me way to long to figure this out. I think you need to move to Connecticut. Again the invasive species of common carp are not a conservation issue. I really wish the MDC would give you a pond or something and make you a carp place of your own. That would be great and give Fishingwrench another thing to bash them about . He likes the Spoonbill fishery a lot, BilletHead

  25. MoCarp, You or anyone else on here are not bullied. We gig at each other.(no pun intended) Yes there are many views on your posts. Mainly because we see the post on conservation issues. There is no conservation issue with carp. They are plentiful, they are everywhere and they are invasive. You post above about carp fishing tourneys being a social gathering. What do you call a bow fishing tourney? The same thing a social event where guys compete. No difference at all. Yes the fish die. There are plenty of carp for everyone. Even the guys with there stealthy carp fishing gear and camo to hide from prying eyes. You and I disagree but made our peace. We are at an impasse right now. I tell you what buddy. If you would post your stuff on the carp threads I bet most folks would leave you alone. Carp are not a conservation issue here. They are not front page news. If someone caught a Missouri Record then post on the main page. I am sure everyone would like to see a record catch. BTW I like your new avatar photo. It is a better likeness of you . Remember gigged not bullied, BilletHead
