This all has me thinking about burger joints that have been around a long time. Many have some good memories attached.

Winstead's on The Plaza in KC. Art Deco architecture that's pretty cool. Burgers, rings, shakes, sodas, The Skyscraper soda that comes in a vase and is best eaten by 2+ people. Neighbor lady used to take us there, likely to give my mom a break. An annual tradition with my kids to go down and see The Plaza lights and eat there. Expanded, contracted and only the original (1940's) location is left. Filed BK in February so it may not survive. Real estate is worth more than the franchise...

Last time I was at Winsteads (1980?) was to pull an all-nighter remodel and equipment changeout. 2-3 guys from every trade were there, stepping in and out as needed. I was changing out the pass-thru heater when they removed the counter and stools. I've never seen as many cockroaches in one place in my life, the floor was black with them.

No biggie I guess, that was a long time ago. They're surely all dead by now...

I can't dance like I used to.

There are a couple classic burger joints in St. Louis...Carl's Drive in is always fun. 16 seats, 8 or each side of an open kitchen, and they make their own rootbeer. O'Connells has a unique style of burger. Spencer's Grill, Blueberry Hill, Trainwreck, Village Bar, etc...I'm not much on the overloaded DDD style burgers. If you want a Loose Meat Burger, Hit the Maid-Rite in Rolla, their chicken is good too.

Who's been to Wimpy's in Washington MO on Jefferson St.? That was an everyday deal for me when I had lunch break at vo-tech school. Get it to go and sit by the river and eat.

I went to the farmers market this morning. I was extremely disappointed.

The market was closed March - July. It has been moved from its traditional location because of street construction, and many vendors no longer show up.

Only two limited veg stands. Two. Limited. There were wood bowls, honey, candles, bread, crystals, goat cheese, local farm meats, food trucks, but no tomatoes. No tomatoes.

The only thing I bought was baby eggplant. I drove south to the truck farm area on the banks of the Arkansas river and stopped for zuchinni, tomatoes, onions, and bell peppers. I just finished making a batch or ratatouille for tonight.

While out and about, we stopped at a sausage and butcher shop for sausages to go with the ratatouille. I also picked up some short ribs to braise for tomorrow.

Can you imagine? No tomatoes? Where will I get my Cherokee Purples?

You might search a little for small farmers that do CSAs or supply restaurants. I don’t remember the website but there’s one that lists CSAs and you can filter down by location.
