Lighting makes a big difference in pictures, and natural light beats indoor light hands down. That's why I often carry my food outside for pictures. That, and to give you knuckleheads more chances for tired old jokes about my deck rail. :D I also do pics on my kitchen table with light coming in the windows. Not as easy to find natural light this time of year though. I like a lower angle better than an over-the-top-shot. And, if the picture is of food, make it fill the frame. I almost always process them a little too -- straighten, crop, adjust exposure. Not a fan of heavily boosted saturation or contrast as the pictures look unnatural, but a little bit can improve things and help colors differentiate some.

I assume about everyone is using a phone to take their pictures, and the type of phone makes a lot of difference. Kathy's iPhone 8 takes way better pictures than my 6s.

iPhone X but I always do straight over the top shots.  I don't want you guys eyeballing my digs to take cheap shots at it like your deck.:)  Or if my wife is scantily clad....

Heck, this crowd will even take jabs at your plates! :D

My wife bought square plates with red flowers on them...…Hate em!!!!  The fork falls of the edge into your food and the red coloring is kind of disturbing with some dishes.  Ruins my photos too.  Always buy ROUND plates!!!!

Oh I’ve got stuff from back in the days when I was doing sports and senior pics when my kids were in school. Mostly gathering dust now.

I am usually in my underwear, just have to make sure there are no reflections, that would definitely take away from the photogenics.
