Ham Posted March 2, 2017 Posted March 2, 2017 Super Dave spends all this time painting hard baits that he never fishes. Odd. Every Saint has a past, every Sinner has a future. On Instagram @hamneedstofish

Had a few bugs in weird colors that needed to look like craws. Ran a few warts as a brush up, hadn't painted for a long time. Boy got into it, that added more baits to show him more techniques and tricks. End result...about 30 baits I probably won't throw. As noted. But he did learn how to run an airbrush... Hope it works, or at least points you to something that will. I learned a bunch of things working on these baits, including how to commit some spectacular FNG mistakes. The Bugs in particular were a challenge due to the original screw eyes. Those were enough of a disaster that I eventually punted, and just replaced them. They also have some odd sharp edges that don't play nicely with clear coats. One may still get another coat to address it. As far as Flex Coat goes for a clear... None of those ghost baits were base coated this winter. Those were all shot, then cleared with FC, in 2005-6. We just picked those out of a bin, dusted them off, and went to work. Did shoot the purple and orange bellies on a few.
Guest Posted March 3, 2017 Posted March 3, 2017 Living with imperfection is a big challenge. Tonight, I got the scales right but goofed up the bluegill gill plate. The more I tried to correct the problem, the worse it looked. At some point you have to put the air brush down & take a break. Sometimes, I question my sanity with the details. But stock bluegill colors a kinda trashy, then certain lures dont come in a particular color pattern. For instance, PRADCO has the best matte firetiger of all time. I was able to spray plasti dip & achieve similar matte results. I really like stock colors that only need a couple details added & 1 coat of clear. It really makes life easier. These start from scratch ultra detailed blugill will make you go mad sometimes. Either way, I enjoy this part of lure modification. I feel like i've got an edge when I'm fishing with my own match the hatch lures.
Guest Posted March 3, 2017 Posted March 3, 2017 SPRO is producing clear RK Crawlers. Somebody at SPRO knows there's a niche market for DIY painters like myself. Painting is so much easier when you don't have to break out the acetone & stink up the place.

fishinwrench Posted March 3, 2017 Posted March 3, 2017 Surely I'm not the only one that notices that the colored lip Wiggle Warts catch more and bigger fish than the clear lipped ones. Paint those lips!!! ??
