I've fished a lot at night on rivers in the Ozarks and never had much luck don't know why April to September all kinds of lures top water cranks plastics even the famed jiTterbug smallie bite no luck even live bait I do fine at daytime no luck at night any explanations ?

You have to think backwards at night in my opinion. Every turn has a shallow inside and a deep outside. During the day we float over the shallow side and cast to the deep channel. At night it's backwards. I think the big smallmouth chase the minnows in the shallows at night. I've caught a lot of good fish floating over the "good" water and fishing the marginal shallow water at night.

I can't top matt's jitterbug. A hollow body frog maybe?

I used to bite off a slider worm on a jig head. Called it a Ned rig. My other rod was a bamboo Montague that had a leather line and I used a lure called a Spro McStick. Had 9 sharp hooks on three trebles. Had my boy set it up for me and a batch of Tom Collins'.

FISH ON!

Now Cecelia, get back on the veranda and do what yer told!

Geez! Can't believe the cheek of women these days, not to mention the help.

I'll occasionally throw a jitterbug on the rivers, but they are mostly reserved for pond fishing. A 3" green pumpkin grub is about as close to old school as I get and I'm not sure that qualifies.

doesn't qualify IMHO, but still a blast to fish.

Lol, the Zara Spook was released in the plastic version in 1939, but it ain't old enough for you.

Herb's Dilly Buzz Spoon

Its the best buzzbait that you cant get anymore. Those inline buzzbaits jump up quickly & jump over logs with ease.

I caught an 8.1 LMB at the Romp hole in college on that buzzbait.

They work, as do Bombers and Hellbenders.

my first trolling experience was from my dad and grampa trolling hellbenders and bombers on three way rigs with nungesser spoons. Still have an old tackle box full of my grampas old "custom" painted ones. They sure do work!
