Terrierman Posted June 2, 2015 Posted June 2, 2015 Switching this conversation a little. This reminds me of when I was growing up. Any school I went to you had to take a civics class. Every year, every year, .... In this class you learned how to care for a flag, citizenship and social norms. This included walking on the right side of an aisle or sidewalk, taking your hat off when talking to a lady, always calling your elders Mr or Mrs (that included a 30 year old talking to a 60 year old), taking your hat off inside a building, etc. You never went to visit someone without bringing some food along. Now if I try to walk down the right side of an aisle in Battlefield Mall you will get run over. Ahhh, the good ole days!! How society changes. Young people have been taking the world to hell on a bobsled since the days of Aristotle. ness 1

fishinwrench Posted June 2, 2015 Posted June 2, 2015 On the way out of a convenience store recently I (out of habit) held the door for a gal about 8 steps away on her way in. She stopped dead in her tracks and looked at me like she was ready to hit me with pepper spray. I let the door go, shook my head, and headed to my truck, and she then walked on in. I looked in my mirror to see if I had a booger hanging out of my nose or something.... Nope, handsome as ever. That bugged me all day. Screw people! Fly_Guy and Champ188 2

Like the Coen brothers said No country for old men. We are supposed to be so developed as a country socially but in reality the kids nowadays are just socially retarded. I bet making eye contact, giving her a smile and saying 'come on' would have left you in a better mood, and maybe planted a seed in that little snot's noggin. When I get in that situation, or even if a lady asks me to go ahead first, I like to tell them 'No, no. Momma always said ladies first.' That's why chicks dig me. Feel free to use that line -- no attribution necessary. Like the Coen brothers said No country for old men. The baby boomers did a bad job of parenting in my opinion I'm not responsible for the rest of the baby boomers' kids. My kids were all brought up to do things like straw hat mentioned. One of the most satisfying things you'll ever get as a parent is seeing them do those things on their own, or having someone tell you your kids are thoughtful or polite. Champ188 1 John
Members Xraydude Posted June 2, 2015 Members Posted June 2, 2015 Fishinginwrench, your not doing it right. Remember to put your earbuds in and never look up from your phone to make eye contact as you hold the door. ness 1
MOPanfisher Posted June 2, 2015 Posted June 2, 2015 Definite turn in the topic, but I like it. Several years ago while deployed in Florida on a Hurricane recovery I stopped at a local gas station like I did most morning for a coffee. One of the older ladies working there was just coming inside from a smoke break. Out of habit I stopped, stepped aside and held the door, she said go ahead you are a customer. I explained that my father would come back to life and kick my backside if I did. She laughed and said something about there being a few gentlemen left. BTW if she was working when I stopped in from then on she would not let me pay for coffee. My son at 17 is fairly good at remembering to hold doors for ladies (and others) and is good about taking an umbrella outside (at church) on sundays when its raining and covering the ladies as they walk towad the entrance. Seldom does it keep them dry but it is most makes you feel good when someone comments on what a hard working gentleman your chld is. ness 1

Men, Women, Children, spider monkey, whatever. Some people are very uncomfortable with it, that's why I do it. That and my dad would have kicked my butt if I would have acted any different. I think most people are uncomfortable with it because they are uncomfortable with saying thank you. I would have held the door all day for her. Champ188 1
