conorsixtakc Posted June 15, 2015 Posted June 15, 2015 I'll say it. It is a magic bullet. 100%. that was quick dtrs5kprs, give me a minute to grab some popcorn... to add fuel to the fire, it's the perrenial hot bait at my favorite eastern kansas reservoir where it's common to see 12' water clarity. it produces countless smallmouth, ranging in size from inches to the 5 pounder in my avatar (although that specific fish was NOT caught on the ned ) dtrs5kprs 1
Quillback Posted June 15, 2015 Posted June 15, 2015 Don't forget seasonality either. The Ned is a great winter and pre-spawn bait. dtrs5kprs, Seth and Ham 3
dtrs5kprs Posted June 15, 2015 Posted June 15, 2015 Don't forget seasonality either. The Ned is a great winter and pre-spawn bait. Like those big Beaver fish you west enders caught back in Feb. It works under virtually all weather and water conditions, on basically any lake. I get pics from places like TX, Guntersville, MN, etc., on a regular basis. Have 100% never seen anything like it. 5bites Posted June 15, 2015 Posted June 15, 2015 Every time I read about the butthurt whiners griping about the Ned rig I have to wonder did they get their feelings hurt when the Eakins jig came out? It wasn't a new thing either but there it is with someone name on it and they are actually making money on it to boot. That right there is a difference. A fishing report on a small forum based out of swmo is hardly going to generate a lot of sales other than some locals. Now back to the Eakins jig. Like the Ned it wasn't new. It was a "system" type deal though. Line size and type, jig weight, type of craw. It worked/works too. Actually I used a little jig 75% of the time when I started really getting serious over 10 years ago or so. I make my own jigs now and have a more broadened range of techniques I like. Anyway the "system" part of it was the key. Same with the ned. Slapping a part of a worm on a mushroom head jig isn't new. Using the right weight, type of plastics, and method of fishing it is what has really came out of the Ned thing. That's what I've taken from it anyway. Nobody is claiming an end all lure here. Even the guy selling the heads isn't. He likes to use it and catches lots of fish (pics to prove it btw) and reports here about it. Honestly I haven't put much time on it. If you read my last report I was doing what I like to do and that's have a short length of 20lb line out. The Ned likely would have caught more fish and I knew that the whole time I was there. It simply wasn't what I wanted to do. Not because I'm to proud or think it's a gimmick devised by people who have nothing to gain by it. It's simply a way that has caught on and people are talking about it. No more no less. Also a word of advice. I know I'm not 105 years old so I can't possibly know what I'm talking about but if you don't like having things shoved down your throat, shut your mouth. If you don't like things shoved in your face then just keep your face the heck out of places where that could happen. Daryk Campbell Sr, Seth, dtrs5kprs and 1 other 4

Let's not take this too far As far as bigger fish, the method of slowing it down and fishing next to cover isn't exclusive to the Ned! MOsmallies 1 "Honor is a man's gift to himself" Rob Roy McGregor
snagged in outlet 3 Posted June 15, 2015 Posted June 15, 2015 My experience with the NED is just like what MItch said. It's a great numbers bait, but the size really is lacking. I've caught a load of fish on it in the short amount of time that I've spent using it, but only 2 or 3 have broke the 12" mark. My best is a 15" largemouth from the Bourbeuse. I love it for floats since I am usually not worried about size those days and I never have to replace the bait in a day of fishing unless I break it off. I'm not worried about perch destroying my plastic bodies now so I look forward to catching them again. A PBJ NED has produced a lot of fish for me in dingy water. My goal with trying the NED was to find something that would work on spinning gear in dingy water for my fiance. She always used a green pumpkin grub or trick worm in the past. They work well when the water has decent visibility, but not so well if it's dirty. As long as she is catching something then she is happy and therefore I am happy. Does anybody try using a whole ZinkerZ/TRD on a NED to try and target nicer fish? I whacky rigged one with the weed less jighead and it worked great. I really did it to get it down quicker. No doubt the Ned is a 100% silver bullet. It never fails, ever. Pete Seth 1
Seth Posted June 15, 2015 Posted June 15, 2015 Also a word of advice. If you don't like things shoved in your face then just keep your face the heck out of places where that could happen. I just turned 29 and have been posting here for nearly 10 years. I've had guys jump on me for being a "young cat" in the past. It cracks me up when the older crowd get's their dander up and tries using the age = experience line when it comes to fishing. Just because you've fished longer, doesn't mean you're a better fisherman than somebody with less years. Some people are more open minded and can put things together much better than guys who have been fishing much longer. Of course, there are many on here that I pay close attention to when they post/talk. I've learned a ton from guys who have many more years on the water than me. I'm pretty sure that there are some members on here who's day isn't complete until they get on here and throw in their unwanted two cents worth of pissing and moaning on a topic that they obviously don't care about. If I don't care about a certain topic, I just don't read it and move along. Many must not of listened to momma when they told them that if you have nothing nice to say, don't say anything at all. dtrs5kprs 1
MOsmallies Posted June 15, 2015 Posted June 15, 2015 No doubt the Ned is a 100% silver bullet. It never fails, ever. Last time I fished it, I caught some green sunfish and a 3 lb drum.... I guess it was me though because the little guy never fails Went ahead and hammered em on 5" wacky rigged senkos and WTD topwaters instead. Disclaimer - I don't hate the ned rig and I will use it from time to time... It's just another tool for certain situations like others have stated. And Dave does make a real nice jighead for this technique!! Seth 1
dtrs5kprs Posted June 15, 2015 Posted June 15, 2015 5bites really nailed it with the "system" designation. It is so much more than a worm jammed on a leadhead. Those of us open minded enough to throw it with any regularity are still finding new ways to use it, tweak it, dial it in. Might be overanalyzing, but it's the ingredients that are just a dash that make the pie taste right. Think the next step is going to be using it more and more for suspended fish, side by side with a drop shot. As to the magic bullet deal, this is what I mean by it. I've fished Table Rock regularly for just shy of 20 years. Over that time I'd gone through all the phases, shallow to deep, finesse to power, struggles to bounty, and finally managed to be able to catch fish on a regular basis. Not always keepers, not always numbers, and not every day, but regularly. In 2011 I learned how to fish the little rig. That was the end of the zero for me. Since 2013 I have not been on the lake without catching at least one 15" fish, and at times well upwards of 20 of them. Magic bullet? Darn close if not. conorsixtakc 1
