Was able to get out for a little paddle this morning so decided to go upstream at Delaware town.

Water was moving pretty good but was clear and had a nice green color to it.

Caught my first smallie just into the trip!

If you use multiple hook lures, sooner or later you'll get a double, but it's always a treat. I've had a lot of them over the years, and once even a triple. One of the two biggest smallmouth I ever caught was almost a double--I had the 22 incher and another one that looked to be about 18 inches on at the same time, but the smaller fish got off before I could get them into the canoe. The biggest double I ever actually boated was an 18 incher and a 17 incher.

The reason it isn't to unusual is that when the smallies group up, when you hook one and the lure is hanging outside its mouth, others follow it around and try to take the lure away from it. If there's a loose treble, another one is likely to get hooked. But since they are then pulling against each other, most of the time one escapes.

The weirdest double I ever had was a smallmouth and a turtle. I think I accidentally hooked the turtle first and the smallmouth tried to take the lure away from IT!

And then there was the near double when I hooked a 4 inch green sunfish, had a big smallmouth try to take the lure away from it (I saw the big fish come up to the sunfish, and nope, it wasn't after the sunfish, but the Rapala hanging out of its mouth). The smallmouth got hooked, and then the line broke. In the clear water I saw the smallie shake itself loose, and the little sunfish swam off with my lure!

Cool trip Dougie. Here is a stranger double for you, one fish 2 lures. 2 different versions, once fishing with my father on Truman in the early 80s catching big bluegill. Big bull grabs his hook then makes a hard run about 8 feet and grabs mine, both hooks well in his mouth. Second scenario wading a small creek several years ago, using a small original rapala, hooked and broke off a bass of at most 2 lbs under an overhanging bush, about 30 minutes laker on my way back cast back into spot and got bit again. In his mouth were 2 small original rapalas, one still tied on and one with a few inches of line. I thanked the fish and sent him back to his bush.

These stories are awesome.

I just recently started fishing and had never heard of a double until last year when Yaknar did it.

Was crappie fishing and had a 5lb. bass eat a crappie head first that I had hooked. I mean he ATE IT, the crappie was halfway down his throat with my jig attached. I couldn't get it backed out so I just cut the line and let him have it. Then (same day) it happened AGAIN but the bass let go at the boat.

After that I went and bought the dusty crappie patterned Bagley crankbait I had remembered seeing at the tackleshop, but I never got a sniff on that stupid thing.

Hey Dougie. Nice report and congrats on the double. Me and my boy were standing in the riffle when you came floating through.

Still think this is a crazy double. Gizzard shad and yellow bass.

Ive had multiple crappie eaten on fellows by muskie. Was bass fishing one day on th east en bluffs and hooked a good largemouth and she really put on a show. The second time coming out of the water on me she never made it back on her own. As the bass come out of the water it shook its head and spit my jig and at that very instant a very large muskie come up and very gracefully took care of the very nice 4lb ish bass. It was an awsome thing to see. Wish i had a camera on it.

Now before anyone has a fit about muskie and bass and yada yada the only reason im telling this is because it was a once in a life time moment and it relates to what was said. Please dont turn this into a free for all on opinions of muskie and bass.
