One thing I forgot to ask, if the Neosho is such a POS, laughable fish, why did the MSA raffle off a guided trip for them?

And why is that guide coming to the monthly get together for club members to talk about how to catch them?

I like them all....except Drum....I am a Drum whisperer. ...I can call them up from any piece  of water any time of the year??? It's my weakness or strength  to others.

Chief will never understand  the Stl 5' s disdain for Spotted bass where Smallies  once ruled on a ton of  Ozark Streams. I would say they are right there with a river Largemouth for dumbest  fish on the river or easiest to catch....frigging  aggressive  sob's.

My vote for Missouri  fish would be Hornyhead Chub, the put up a hell of a fight on an Ozark Tenkara rod and after you land them their head can be a great dermal abrasion on your feet after a long day wading Ozark streams....there are  a ton of great applications for the Hornyhead  Chub head...Our Missouri fish

Hey Chief, I've booked more than a few fishing speakers over the years. Here is how the process rolls. Thinking their is nothing special about Neosho bass, but MSA needed a speaker, someone had a question about Neosho bass. A contact was made and he bit. Guessing gas money feed & water while in town and an ad in the newsletter. Raffle trip offered and accepted. Club needs a speaker, speaker wants clients, members need trips....that's how that rolls. They are having a speaker they have not seen before and that is the only significance that it has. Might be good, might suck.

You're absolutly right. There is nothing special about the Neosho. But there must be some fasination as you easterners keep bringing it up. Not as a fish worthy of angling for though. True, it is a smallmouth but, it's apparently a trash fish in the eyes of the elite.

As far as everybody else is concerned, it's just another fish in the water.

Everybody loves catching a drum. Until they find out its a drum. Excellent fighters.  Not worth much else though. I feel your pain.

Spots though only occupy about 7% of Ozark streams mileage. And of that 7%, their population density is usually below 20%.

I say usually because you have seen a spike in you're area.

I have always heard that they are excellent table fare. One time dad caught a 5 pounder. We had always heard they were good tasting so we decided to clean it. We obviously did not know how to clean a drum. I think we ended up with a tablespoonful of meat. LOL.  Haven't touched one since!

I thought I was the only drum whisperer.  As for eating they aren't bad.  Used to fillet and eat them at times.  Sometimes they would be fine other times they would be very rubbery.  Don't seem to have a lot of built in flavor, so some good spicy mix is a help.  As for bass I have nothing against spots but I would much rather catch smallies. Never considered catching a 5 lb channel while fishing as a bad thing, just delicious.
