How do you get 6 fish to lay side by side like that for a photo? I have a hard time holding one on the ruler to see if I can count it as a keeper. Just asking...

Funny, I never even thought about that? But, yeah, that's pretty unusual for none of them to have even a tail curled up?

Maybe he uses Xanax in his livewell?

Or maybe they're velcro'd to the carpet?

I've got a habit of saying what I think, so here goes.  Live fish out of water generally keep their mouths shut tight except when they're gasping, trying to breathe with their gills flared - but all six of those fish have their mouths slightly open in the same way, relaxed in death, and their gill covers are closed.  The fish in that photo have non-circulating blood pooling around their lips and gills, showing some pink.  Not one dorsal fin is sticking up as you'd expect live bass to do when they're being messed with.  The colors of most of the fish in the photo have even faded from their live colors and they're getting pale around the mouths, gills, tails, and fins, especially #5.  Those bass have been dead for a while.

If they're all at least 15" then that's a legal limit and I'm not criticizing.  Just saying that I think your friend's pulling your leg about releasing those.

DANG IT.... Thanks for clearing that up Sam. I thought something was a little fishy with that whole thing... some pun intended.

The kayak tournaments I'm looking into fishing are CPR and scored on length. Just based on photos. I think it's a great idea for the fish's sake.

I fish a small, weeknight circuit in NE KS that is kind of like a MLF format, except it's still the biggest 5 instead of heaviest total weight of bass over 12". Everyone uses the same scale to weigh their fish and then immediately turn them lose. Last year was the first year and it worked really well and was a lot of fun.

I refrained from saying anything about them appearing dead but I think it's pretty evident that Sam is dead right, no pun intended. That's six that none of us will ever have a chance to catch, along with any they may have spawned. Legal or not, you can only eat them once.

Just so everyone knows, I agree with everything you are saying about the fish being out of the water, laying on the carpet, and all of that.  These were not my fish.  If I am not keeping a fish its back in the water as quickly as I can get it there.  I will snap a photo as soon as I get it free of the hooks.  I personally don't like it when bass are kept, but that's my opinion, but for those who catch them and want to keep them, that's your call.  All I know about these fish are what he told me.  I can also say that I know this guy eats a lot of fish, but, I have never known him to keep a bass for eating unless it was not going to make it anyways.  Didn't mean to stir up an argument either way.  I have plenty of friends who feel that a fish is a fish and if they catch it they are eating it and making any statement otherwise gets an argument started that never ends.

1.)  Sorry to the original poster, i imagine that reports from him will become few and far between, which is highly unfortunate cuz its clear he knows what hes doing.  Dead, alive, filleted, swimming, bleeding...it doesnt matter, most here are just griping because somebody killed "their" bass, and they cant put up numbers like that in the end of january.  For the record, cold water fish taste better, and those fish will be wonderful.  Those are some great bass!

2.)  About the tournament thing....personally i think they are the dumbest thing ever.  I think it totally would take the fun out of fishing and make it stressful, but i cant help but think....table rock is a thriving fishery, and bass are super prolific, adaptable and opportunistic.  So how exactly are all the tournaments causing trouble?  I dont do the whole LOZ nonsense...but i think the bass there still survive, and are doing ok despite being treated like sports equipment.  With all the complaining going on, can anyone actually point to evidence that it harms the fishery?

I wouldn't say that most of those who have commented on this thread can't put up numbers like that at the end of January. For lots of us, it's one of the better months out of the year to fish, and that's really just a pretty standard day on the lake with a Jerkbait in the winter. I'm glad to see it though, because it tells me the fish are getting back to normal from the flood.

As far as tournaments go, to me, they are enjoyable, and a good way to measure how much you have learned about fishing.

I do like the idea of MLF type tourneys becoming the norm, and I do wish a few of the circuits would consolidate. There are a lot of tournaments, and fish care in some of the smaller ones leaves something to be desired.

As far the orginal poster goes, they weren't his bass, no one is calling him out for posting the pic. I don't see why he wouldn't hang out and learn/gripe with the rest of us cabin fever guys on here.

Mixermarkb, just for reference, mjk86 once boasted that his family has killed every keeper bass they've caught out of Table Rock for all the years they've been visiting here on vacation. Then he goes on another current thread and makes a supposedly humorous comment about how far down a hill a 10-pound bass can flop.

Nuff said.
