It wasn't uncommon for St. Louis to dump ground garbage into the Mississippi during the first half of the 20th century, nor was it uncommon for large cities like Chicago or Seattle to dump untreated sewage into receiving streams and lakes.  I don't know why St. Louis would've been any different, there were fish kills on the lower Meramec in the early 60s, ad MDC was complaining about domestic sewage on the lower river in the 70s.  Clean Water Act didn't come around until the 1970s and MSD wasn't formed until 1956.  Pollution controls weren't in place and most municipal sewage treatment plants back then were glorified cess pools.  It's gross now and it needs fixed, but in terms of long-term damage, the Meramec's seen worse.

agreed.....I guess I'm letting my emotions get the best of me because the Meramec river has a very special spot with me. I know it has been worse but, when you see it first hand happening to something you love it really hurts. I guess the good thing is it is occurring on the lower river where the PPM's will be far less than if it were happening on the upper river. I saw a spot on the Gasconade where a similar thing was happening and it really screwed up a section of river, although is was only a small section it was very clear it was affecting the aquatic life.

I guess that just how the cookie crumbles so to speak with the ills of society or being around a populated area that builds water treatment plants on rivers.

hahahahahaha.....watch it Tom Foolery :). I just think it's very sad to see that many thousands of gallons of shiot and rubbers and toilet paper pumped into the river......it's friggin nasty.

I don't eat the fish anyway, so the keeping of fish is a non issue for me......I haven't cleaned a fish in over 20 years but, my uncle and dad made me clean all of their catches for years......I used to be a real master of filleting.

I think they strain and chop the solids out before it gets to lagoons and outlet pipes. That part is probably still working.

But it shouldn't be. We have the technology, but it boils down to money. As they say, it is the root of all evil.

But never hide your emotions for your love of the river. That is your passion and it is nothing to be ashamed of.

Seeing blatant pollution into lakes/rivers really sets me off.   If I was mayor of Fenton I'd tell everyone to quit flushing until the treatment plant was back online and get some people busy fixing it like yesterday.   Block those lines off and let it back up into their houses for all I care, but DON'T just allow raw waste to flow into the MFing river.   Jesus Christ !

We can go back to being concerned about global warming after THIS is straightened out.  But for now this should be priority one in that area.

Wrench Hog Wally and I pulled up to the pipe in Fenton  in his jet the other day to see it and honestly  I have never seen anything  like that before but the smell and the visuals  off dung and tampons and condoms.....I was gonna take video but we could only take being within  a certain  distance  as the smell was quite overwhelming. I agree with you but it's  MSD's plant not Fenton's.....I know this I was just about to tears, it was a serious  blow to my alleged adult ego seeing that......it's  mother fing disgrace

Anybody know what is going to take so long to get the plant back online? I understand the flooding was worse, but the VP plant was partially treating within a week and fully operational in less that a month.

I kinda do.

500 hp solid waste grinders, multiple pumps, filters and the associated electrical infrastructure needed to run it all.

Yeah, takes a little while to patch it together after being underwater for a while.

I read that there's supposed to be some type of meeting in Arnold or something, with MSD and some local council people or something regarding the sewage effluent. Apparently since a lot of the municipalities downstream of Fenton are in Jefferson county, they want MSD to fix it sooner, and think (rightly or wrongly) that they're dragging their feet on it.
