Al Agnew Posted June 4, 2016 Posted June 4, 2016 Wanted to thank everybody again for the thoughts and prayers. Mary finished her treatment on May 18. She had more problems than the average patient with the chemo part of it...fortunately that part was only the first and last four days. It made her quite sick, she had somewhat of an allergic reaction to it, and it knocked her white blood cell counts for a loop. Two days after she finished, she started running a fever, and with the extremely low white cell counts, she had to go into the hospital to continually test for infections and administer antibiotics. At that point, she was also in very severe pain in the areas where the radiation had burned her skin and mucous membranes. We spent five days in the hospital (they brought in an extra bed and I stayed with her the whole time), and they were the lowest point of this whole thing. Her white cell counts finally started rising, and were good enough for her to leave the hospital after five days, which was May 25. Her cell counts are now back to normal, fever is long gone, skin is healing. She's still in some pain but nothing like it was. Doctors assure us that everything is now proceeding as it should. She's still easily fatigued, and spends quite a bit of time sleeping, but is gradually getting more active. In about two more weeks she sees the doctors one more time to make sure the skin is still healing the way it should, and three months or so she'll get a scan to see if there is any cancer left anywhere--they said that it might take a year to completely clear it from her body. But they say the chances of a complete cure are well over 95%. It hasn't been any fun, for sure, but it could have been so much worse. BilletHead Posted June 5, 2016 Posted June 5, 2016 Mrs. BilletHead and I are so glad to hear about this recovery! I can relate to you Al being a caregiver. Bet there is no way we can know what our wives have felt. I know when Mrs. BilletHead had her chemo she had to take a neulasta shot. This was to try to keep her white count up. Six of those shots at 6000.00 bucks each. Thank goodness for insurance. Did they have to send a team of scientists to the plains of Indonesia to extract fresh tears from a living Javan Rhinoceros and expedite them back before they cooled ? The thought of that kinda crap makes me furious. Over-capitalizing on people's pain and/or fear of dying is the lowest form of con robbery. Sorry but I had to get that out.
