I am quite happy with braid, (fireline on BC, and Nanofil on spinners). I have tried several time to use a leader on the nanofil and for the life of me I cannot get a knot to hold, has cost me a couple lures, so I now just tie directly to the lure/jig. What knot do you use on the nanofil? I lost two jigs back to back on fish on crooked creek last week when I tied straight to nanofil. Normally I use a 6' leader of 6 lb p-line on 6 lb nano with a uni to uni knot. Never had a line failure at the knot on a fish. I got hung and broke the whole thing off, didn't want to bother with retying a leader then a jig while standing in the stream so tried to go straight to nano. Failed miserably. I used a Trilene knot. Maybe should have used palomar?

LOL. http://www.berkley-fishing.com/Berkley-ae-how-to-tie-the-nanofil-knot.html Looks like a palomar with the tag end going through the loop twice instead of once.. MOPanfisher Posted July 20, 2016 Posted July 20, 2016 If you tie directly to the lure with braid (and Nanofil seems worse i.e. slicker) you can't use the same knot you use on mono. palomar will work, I use a Fish-n-fool knot. I haven't seen the nanofil knot, will go look at it. As for the leader I have tried blood knot, and Albright knots, they seem tight and solid at first but after a while, I don't know if the water lubricates the knot or what, but it simply slides apart. I don't have any problems with loosing jigs on nanofil, which is primarily what I fish with it, either crappie or walleye, it it certainly not as abrasion resistant as mono but no braid is to my knowledge.

I'll never go back to mono or any like product. And no I dont use a leader. I've wondered if I'm maybe not maximizing my numbers on a given trip because of that but 1, I don't think the fish are that advanced 2, I'm still staying plenty busy enough. I haven't seen a noticeable increase or decrease in numbers. But I have noticed a massive decline in break offs and reties due to wear. Interesting and you are fishing water that is pretty dang clear most of the time correct? ?? I have been told by a lot of guys that I would need a flourocarbon or mono leader but, I have never done it. I was just wondering if you guys do it??? So now I have to ask and I see MOpan fisher said he does but I am actually very interested in how you guys feel it performs on Baitcasters.....I use it on the Mississippi and Missouri with quite heavy plugs but have never really used it on a baitcasters other than for A-rigs and big Olde cranks....do you guys use it on BC's with smaller plugs???
Ham Posted July 20, 2016 Posted July 20, 2016 I choose to use a leader with my Nanofil or braid because I want a weak spot that can be broken if needed. I use a alberto. The uni/uni works fine, but bangs along thru the guides. The alberto is longer and skinny and flys thru the guides. I have also used a surgeon's knot where you go thru a third time. That works, but seems a little weaker than the other two knots. It will fail quicker on a snag, but none of those connecting knots have failed on fish. My knot failures seem limited to a snag that I do a dead pull on trying to free or bend hook out. Line failure to zebra mussels is a whole different animal. I have zero interest in Nanofil on a bait caster. I do use some braid on bait casters. I am throwing braid on my topwaters right now. Every Saint has a past, every Sinner has a future. Flysmallie Posted July 20, 2016 Posted July 20, 2016 I love that there are so many options. You can use a separate line for each method easily. Some of you do. But just remember it should fit your style, you have to find these things out for yourself. That's the fun part. Finding what you like, building confidence. I can't imagine throwing topwater on braid. To me and the way that I have confidence in topwater it has to be mono. Yeah I'm stuck in the eighties or something. I have used braid on topwater. Even as recently as last year. I like it for WTD baits but I don't use those. I like mono for topwater, crankbaits, spinnerbaits, floating worms (see I'm still stuck in the past). If sensitivity is needed then I'll go to braid or flouro. Or maybe I won't. I'm such a hack these days.

I can still remember lots of my floating worms bites. Seeing a 3 pounder roll up and engulf the worm as it settled. My first lights out bite where I'm watching my worm work across a grass flat and them the worm just disappeared like some one had turned off a switch. Seeing a huge boil on the surface of Lake DeGray late, late one day and realizing that was a fish getting my floating worm. I still have them, but rarely find myself in a place with flats to fish them on. Every Saint has a past, every Sinner has a future. On Instagram @hamneedstofish
MOPanfisher Posted July 20, 2016 Posted July 20, 2016 I use mostly Fireline on BC with one spooled with Stren Gorilla (because it was on clearance), mostly 10#, but the Gorilla is 14#, I don't have any problems with it on a bait caster, but I am not a heavy user of BC's I tend to be more of a spinning reel guy. I have never even considered Nanofil on a Baitcaster. I may try again with the leader thing on my nanofil, but sure got discouraging the first few times.

I fish them everywhere and I always have one tied on. Works great on our area lakes and rivers. I have more people laugh at that pink worm than I care to count. If they only knew. Johnsfolly 1
