Kayak Repair

Recommended Posts

I’m currently in the same boat. Last time I took my kayak out floating on the meramec I wound up noticing it getting pretty unstable when I was turning. After making it to the access we checked it out, and my suspicions were confirmed that the hull was somehow getting water sloshing in it.

I’m having a hard time finding out what type of plastic it is to figure out what type of patching kit would be good. All I know is it’s a “Field and Stream Shadow Caster”.

Any suggestions on a couple different “good” patching kits to try out?

Call or email Perception Company, I think they are the ones that make it.  They should point you in right direction.

So I sent an email to perception and I’m currently waiting to see if they respond, and I talked a little bit with someone from the company under who’s brand the kayak is sold, (“field and stream”) and was suggested to try something called “Marine Tex Might Repair Kit”. Anyone have any experience with that stuff? If so, what’d you think of it?

There’s some awesome YouTube videos of this. Last year i had several on my trailer, and when i got to the launch spot my yak had been dragging the road for a few miles. Hole you can put your fist in right on the nose.  Lots of guys use plastic 5 gallon buckets to repair. Heat it up.  Look for videos.

I’m about to do mine. I’m going to foam fill the nose through the hole, then glass it over.

The best way to fix any of these is plastic welding. It’s not as hard as what you would think. I hear of people using buckets but you can order plastic welding rods that are easier to deal with.

The biggest issue you have with other methods is adhesion. These plastics are full of mold release agents. Things don’t stick well to that without some serious prep. Then there are some plastic repair products that may work better than just glassing it over, depending on the kayak you are working with. It’s a lot less messy too.

I've seen some very durable repairs done with interwoven tie-straps (zip-ties) and RTV silicone.

Just drill 1/8" holes around the area, weave in the zip ties, cover with RTV, and slap a piece of milk carton or Anti-freeze jug over it (also stitched in with zip ties).

Strong, flexible, effective.

Not quite.   If I knew how to convince my wife of that.....then I would know EVERYTHING.   👍

We had a fight earlier today because her and Maddy were talking about contracting "bronchitis" from someone.    I butted in and informed them that you can't GET bronchitis from someone.     It's a CONDITION, not a transferrable disease.

She Googled.....then got quiet......but never gave me credit for pointing out her ignorance.     Typical!  🙄
