We drank a lot of wine on our vacation a couple weeks ago. Just down the road from where we stayed was a property with a small sign at the end of the driveway that said 'Wine and Oil - Direct Sales'. The house was surrounded by vineyards and olive trees. We pulled in and drove on down towards the house. Other than another little sign at a fork in the driveway there was nothing going on to make you think you should be there.

We pulled around back and rang the doorbell.

After a bit an elderly man came out and we told him we were there to taste the wine. He spoke zero English, so he went around the corner and got another guy. Turned out he didn't speak a word of English either, but he knew why we were there. He unlocked the door, took us into a room and pointed to a lineup of bottles that looked like they'd been there for years. The bottles were dusty and the wine inside was faded. He pointed to the darkest-colored wine and smiled then clasped his hand on his bicep to signal it was strong. We shook our heads and he proceeded to open up a newer bottle for us to try. We had pretty low expectations but the wine was actually very good. We let him know we'd take a bottle, which was 6 Euros. I had a 5 and a 50. He kinda smiled and said, 'Cinque OK', and out we went with a bottle for 5 Euros (about $6).

I tried to get him to reenact the 'strong' thing, but this is what I got.

One thing that was driven home for us over there is that winemaking and grape growing is an agricultural endeavor. We saw lots of folks pruning vines, and tractors going down rows mowing between them and disking up the soil near the base. The dude we bought the wine from wasn't wearing a clean shirt waiting for people to come in and buy his wine -- he was outside working. 

Some of the best times were these little interactions with the locals.

Fear sweetened spirits such as Southern Comfort, Irish Mist, and Yukon Jack, as well as the new sweet bourbons. If you go that way, it will only end badly.

Those bring back some very hazy memories that shul probably not be relived.  I love trin different things, I will sample different beers, wines etc. just about anywhere, many have been terrible others pretty good.

Viviano's on the hill goes to Italy every year in late summer and early fall and imports thousands of bottles of local wines from there.  All very reasonably priced.  He has a tasting we he gets back and they will completely sell out before Xmas.  If you want the best selection you have to get ion there well before Thanksgiving.  My dad was famous for buying cases at time every year on the first day of the tasting.  Some very good wines!!!

I rarely drink anything but bud light.  Tonight a little Rodney Strong Chardonnay and a Guinness black lager.

I picked up some of this the other night and for a Budweiser product it is very good and complex while being very smooth and easy drinking.  And at 7.1 ABV you don't need many

I like a good red beer every once in a while.  I have to watch my figure though😁

I figured with the stock market and the virus it's time for some good Bourbon, or Whisky, or Whiskey. I'm good with all. I'm thinking on the gravel bar after a good steak dinner on a cool breezy late spring or early summer evening.  One bottle may not be enough, whatcha bringing?
