Hey guys I was just curious what reel you guys use for this application. I have basically all Lews reels with most of them being a BB1 pro. I have heard great things of about the Diawa Tatula reels. The T-wing system seems great for flipping and skipping. Thanks for your input.

Use what you got. just adjust them for dlipping and pitching. My self I like them real fast forcvoth those applicarions. Can flip nd  pitch withleastamout of pressire also use a spinning rod a lot for fipping pitchin g and skipping stuff like waxky worms

Pitching is one thing. Skipping is a whole 'nother thing.

I have no idea why but using (cheap) braid for backing and only 60-75 yards of flourocarbon on a baitcaster makes SKIPPING easier.  Something about the weight of the spool I think.

Having the confidence to just let it fly is the real key, and that only comes from picking out miles of backlashes.  Have fun and take some extra line. Some baits skip better than others, and the trailer on your jig can either make you or break you.  Avoid ribbed trailers (like Beavers) because they bite the water too hard.  The head design (shape) of a jig head is what you'd expect to help or hurt you, but oddly enough that isn't the case.  I can skip a football head just as easily as I can the flat bottomed pyramid style heads. It has more to do with the overall bulk of the jig and the angle of momentum.

It ain't about the reel though.  Promise ya that.

I just got a Tatula, and i too have about one every lews model.  all i have done is crank with my Tatula and it is smooth as can be, Much better than my BB1,  I have the older one not the pro.  I will definitly buy another Tatula.  I dont think for the money you can get anything much better.  $99 on amazon for the one i got

I can flip good with the equipment I have. I can skip okay but haven't mastered that yet. I have heard good things about the t-wing system for particularly skipping because of the less resistance it has coming off the reel and was just curious if anybody has tried skipping with the tatula reels. They say it doesn't backlash as much and is easier. You are right wrench skipping isn't easy and takes practice and a good trailer plays a big role.

I saw the ad where they were casting at a brick wall and not backlashing, but my immediate thought was that if it halts an overrun situation like that then it might kill a good skip cast.

Because in all actuality you have to be over running the spool (in a controlled kind of way) in order to make that MONEY Skip Cast.  The line has to be paying out just slightly faster than the bait is moving.    Any tension from the reel, even enough to pull the curl out of the line, is gonna kill it.   No?

I feather the edge of my thumb on the slick edge of the spool on a short skip cast, but on a long one I just let her fly....and stop the spool abruptly when the jig stops moving away from me.

About all iI skip are unweighted sinkos and a few other plastics. My tackle and set up is so far out of the box as to be unvelievabe.I use a 7ft medium light spinning rod that would be better suited for crappie fishing with a average medium sized spinning reel on it and 15lb test braid.  Maybe next year I will go back to using a heavier rod Still not sure a bait casting reel is required. 15 and even 20 lb   just sail. out there with a minium of effort. Briad does not twist up either like Mono.

Here is a great video that helped me immensly when learning to skip with a baitcaster. They promote the Tatula, but they are also sponsored by Daiwa. I do ok with my Curados but I'm nowhere near being an expert. I'd say the biggest factor that they talk about in this video is not having a full spool of line and the spool tension... Only fill your spool about 3/5th of the way and dial your spool tension in like they say. From there it's just practice, practice, practice.
