Does anyone even know what a pallid sturgeon is, or ever seen one, or care if they are around or not? When I worked for the Corps of Engineers, I saw exactly how much money is spent on this "effort" Still sickening to think about. Sturgeon are ugly, trout are pretty, and otters are cute. If I get a vote I say punt on the sturgeon, turn one of the conservation areas into an otter ranch, slaughter any otter outside the fence and make the trout the state fish and institute fly fishing and catch/release only. Good night. SpoonDog 1 John

I don't care anything about sturgeon and I don't see as they are required for ecological balance, but apparently someone somewhere loves them. I can't imagine they need much help because from what I know about them they are tougher than a gar. A guy caught one in Louisiana, Mo. and brought it all the way to Mexico, Mo. in the back of a pickup to show it off. It was still breathing so they put it in the little railroad lake east of town and the crazy thing swam off like nothing was wrong with it.
Quillback Posted January 8, 2017 Posted January 8, 2017 Yeah sturgeon are tough, at least the green and white versions. I fished for them several times in the Columbia river. They had a slot limit at the time, a keeper had to be in the 42"-48" range. We'd anchor up in the river, and fish whole smelt on the bottom. On a good day, you could catch 30-40 of them, but might only get one or two keepers. We'd throw a keeper in a big cooler with some ice, and they would still be alive that night once we got home. I quit keeping them myself as they were not that good to eat IMO.
snagged in outlet 3 Posted January 8, 2017 Posted January 8, 2017 I caught one below winfield dam about 25 years ago on a jig. Not sure it was a pallid but it was a sturgeon. I have an old photo of it around here somewhere. It was about a foot long.
SpoonDog Posted January 8, 2017 Posted January 8, 2017 You're gonna be worm dirt before the sturgeon that shares your birthday. All of your children will be dead. All of their children will be dead, before that fish kicks the bucket. Your life, the eighty measly years you spend on this rock- it's just as inconsequential to them as their existence is to you. From a sturgeon's perspective our species is nothing more than a glorified rat, and the only reason we're in a position to contemplate their persistence is because 200 million years ago they didn't eat our ancestor. So show a lil respect, huh? fishinwrench and Deadstream 2

Of course that's not true, because in the article, near the center of the page, in bold, two inches above the graph you misinterpreted, the author states explicitly that MDC doesn't receive state general revenue. It's in the photo you shared with all of us, and in the next graph of receipts, where again, there are no funds from general revenue. On 1/7/2017 at 0:47 AM, fishinwrench said: What really set me off was when they threatened to gate off a bunch of access areas if their budget ever got cut a little. The cut you're talking about is the sales tax, 61% of their total income. Characterizing that as a little budget cut is like mistaking a manicure for an amputation. It's an absurd position. You can say these properties have been bought and paid for, the graphic below it on pg. 11 demonstrates otherwise. Even with the information in-hand, staring you in the face, you either can't or won't look at it objectively. MDC isn't whining about the money they get from the state. You're saying MDC is whining about the money they get from the state. MDC is saying they'd be unable to keep up service with a 61% budget cut. You're saying MDC is pitching a fit "if their budget ever got cut a little." MDC is saying "let's find out if CWD is an issue." You're saying, without evidence, CWD isn't an issue. MDC is saying hunters can't harvest enough hogs to keep the population in check. You're saying, without evidence, that's not true. It seems like there's a recurring theme here. Skepticism's great. Criticism's great. But all you're offering is strawmen, baseless claims, and misinformed conclusions. I'm not sure why you think folks are supposed to take that for anything more than face value. fishinwrench Posted January 9, 2017 Posted January 9, 2017 Totally agree. My apologies on the table. Not another word out of me about it. Terrierman 1
