grizwilson Posted July 24, 2017 Posted July 24, 2017 We put some ammonia on rags to keep skunks away from deck seems to work.... our biggest problem with skunks is when the coyotes get them near the house, just hate to trap one while I am a bit weak. The dillos at my house have seemed to succumbed to lead poisoning, the ground hog may make a mistake......I was more of a fox urine kind of guy.... “If a cluttered desk is a sign, of a cluttered mind, of what then, is an empty desk a sign?”- Albert Einstein

It is about the Mrs being accustomed to the smell and appreciating your efforts to catch that skunk or 'dillo near the house! Let us put it this way. When I stir one up or we smell roadkill skunk it is "Boy that stinks". Now when our precious dog gets too close and gets a spray then it is like "that is not bad". We have found he baking soda and peroxide mix works pretty good when Sadie gets clobbered. She used to get right into them fighting to the kill. Now in her later years it's like go over to see what it is or ignore it. Sometimes the look see is too close and she gets some. The dog used to chase and tree anything including chipmunks and lizards and of course tree rats. Now it is there goes one and what's the big deal. , She even used to sit and watch them out the window with blood lust going pretty crazy, kind of like JohnsFolly did looking out the window on his visit . Johnsfolly Posted July 26, 2017 Posted July 26, 2017 Why does that Carly Simon song keep going through my head when I look at this grapefruit sized tomatoes? "Annticipaation. Is makin' me late. It's keepin' me waitin'." How long does a man have to wait for a mater sammich? ness and BilletHead 2
Johnsfolly Posted August 5, 2017 Posted August 5, 2017 Ok seemed a little silly waiting on my tomatoes turning red. None of these guys were ever going to turn red. BilletHead 1
MOPanfisher Posted August 6, 2017 Posted August 6, 2017 I was gonna say I would be eating that rascal. I was gonna go through he picnic tab of maters this afternoon and make some juice to put up. But it was storming and the lilly livered border collie crawled into my lap, so we just pulled the lever and napped the afternoon away. Tomorrow is another day! There is a ground hog under a shed about 100 feet from my front door, so far he is just raiding the compost pile, but having played the game with them before I know he will decide fresh is better. One morning he will make a mistake and we will start the cycle over again.
Deadstream Posted August 6, 2017 Posted August 6, 2017 Not the ground hogs fault you napped the afternoon away. Are you just letting it get fat?
Johnsfolly Posted August 6, 2017 Posted August 6, 2017 This is a pretty interesting variety. Wished that my betterhalf kept the label. It is a pretty meaty tomato and fairly sweet. Went well with balsamic and mozzarella. BilletHead and ness 2

I am not in a hurry, he will make a mistake when I am available to take advantage of it. Every couple years another one moves in, not overly worked up over him except digging their holes causes my sheld to settle. Besides you got to have something you are competing against, just to keep life interesting. snagged in outlet 3 1
MOPanfisher Posted August 8, 2017 Posted August 8, 2017 I am working on fall garden right now. Pulled and tossed all the squash plants to make a 15 x 30 or so spot and then tilled up another dead spot both for turnips, will likely mix in some mustard, spinach or some sort.of greens too. Much smaller area than I normally plant but more than enough room to provide turnips for me and everyone I know. And since the Good Lord saw fit to give it all a good soaking I opted out of brush hogging pasture to have a go at the pig weeds etc. In my canteloupes, several nice looking loupes about softball size, since they went in late they are doing well. Didn't get it all weeded but all I could tough it out for. Since a slight mishap with the tomatoes a few weeks ago they havent dine much. BTW tomatoes are extremely sensitive to herbicide, a tiny amount of Crossbow left in an improperly rinsed sprayer plays heck with them. Fortunately I have maters in about 3 locations. Most of the garden has languished in a state of benign neglect since the tomato incident, but cooler weather and rain in August has me back in he mood.
