rps Posted February 28, 2017 Posted February 28, 2017 Over the weekend I picked up my boat from Ulrich. I had them install my new sonars. While the boat was there I asked them to perform a normal engine maintenance even though I had not run the engine for nearly the number of hours considered maximum. I was raised in the era when you did a maintenance every winter. I put the boat in the water after school this afternoon. The new sonar works great. Unfortunately the engine must have something wrong. Whereas before the work the WOT produced 5800 rpm and 37 mph, this afternoon 4500 rpm and 29.5 mph were the best it could do. And instead of a quick on plane the throttle response was a dying dog. I called Ulrich from the water and they were as nice as can be. They promised to find the problem and fix it quickly. I fully expect them to fix the problem. Sadly, this meant I had to pull the boat from the water instead of put it on the lift. And, even more sadly, I will need to drag it an hour up there, come home, drive back up there, and pull it back up here to put it in the lake. Would I be out of line to ask them to water test it this time? What, if anything else, should I do?
fishinwrench Posted February 28, 2017 Posted February 28, 2017 Off the trailer test running is usually unnecessary if they know what they are doing. You can tell alot more about how a outboard is functioning when you can stand next to it. I can't diagnose anything when I am driving the boat at speed. That is why we have test equipment and testing procedures. What motor are we talking about here?(year/make/HP?) It sounds like you've lost spark or adequate fuel supply to one or more cylinders.

Got an email today saying it would be mid April. Im having them send it back tomorrow. It was running just fine when i took it off. Kicking myself now

Based on how it ran and sounded, i would bet on a bad spark plug. 2016 Evinrude 90 HP Etec.

The whole "sending off injectors for cleaning" thing is a scam. They pop out the screens, hook a 9 volt transistor battery to each one, and blow some carb cleaner and compressed air through them. Once removed you can do all 6 yourself for about 5.00 worth of carb cleaner. They don't have any special injector cleaning potion that you can't buy yourself in a spray can at O'Riellys.
aarchdale@coresleep.com Posted February 28, 2017 Posted February 28, 2017 HAHA, Well ill have it all back by friday and i plan on doing just that too them while i have it apart
Fish24/7 Posted February 28, 2017 Posted February 28, 2017 I don;' know anything about the guy's at Ulrich just make sure they didn't swap props on you thinking you wouldn't notice, because they know you'll bring it right back to them because suddenly your motor isn;t turning the rmp's it was. They will charge you hundreds$ to try and solve the "problem". Then they'll put the original prop back on after they drained your wallet and now the motor runs great just like it did before. SOME people are straight up assholes. I had a mechanic steal the brand new plugs out of my motor and put old one's back in it . Guess he thought I wouldn't look. He also rigged the wiring hidden with an exposed bare wire that would vibrate against the block and short causing random stalling when I'd hit waves, just saying that motor blew a head gasket soon after. I also had at least 17 gallons of gas siphoned out of one of my tanks while the boat was on his property. Yes, this guy is still in business ...somehow. I worked around some outboard mechanics for the last 15 years and I know several "tricks" that SOME of these people use to make you a repeat customer.... ALWAYS check for swapped parts too. They will pull parts off your motor and replace them with older used crap then sell your's to someone else. hopefully this is not your case but be cautious!
