Hoping to get at least one trout down there so I can check off another state...

I'll try to do a good trip report too.

I sure hope they do as I'm counting them. :)   I also saw they used to pond stock rainbows during the winter months down there.

wow soon much to do in soon  little time I have family in that area, fly fishing can be tough...a 9 weight or go home.....big streamers in the surf areas for spanish will jack you up, big streamers worker parallel to the surf area wade out no deeper than belly button on a incoming tide, if you keep fish don't string them like you see on the videos..this time of year you'll be shark bait......Jelly fish can be bad sometimes a cheap pair of stocking waders help..youll know by how many people you see in the water...grand Isle area has great fishing worth the drive...

you can and will catch anything.....

Sorry just seeing this.  Absolutely pack a rod a 6 will work on slots in the marsh...but I'd keep them.  More than likely the stress and the water temp won't allow catch and release.  If you can borrow an 8 you'll be great!  My suggestion would be to head over to PAC kayak rentals and rent a kayak for the day.  This video was filmed from there and we caught fish in sight of the launch.  Plus Eddie who runs the place will do his best to help you.  Grand Isle is great if you already own a kayak b/c of the road side access but if not it's almost the same drive and the boats aren't waiting for you.  You can fish the beach or off the hwy...but that's it w/o hiring a guide.  Another option if you decide to go down hwy 23 is kayak venice...http://www.kayakvenicela.com/ .

Thanks PW!  I'm looking at charters now as I'm trying to travel light.  May still pack a small kit.  We are hoping to get a half day on Thursday, but with the work schedule it's going to be up in the air until game time... Wish I could do a yak, definitely want to try.

I really want to focus on catch and release.  I'll try to keep them all in the water, but is the mortality rate on them that bad this time of year?  I don't need to fish them that bad if they are not going to survive...

Thanks to all who posted as well.

Nah not really but a 6 wt would take forever to land a red.  You're not going to hurt the fish population in a half day so have fun.  A charter is the way to go if you have limited time.  You're going to have so much fun.  Can't wait to hear about it!
