They seem to be pretty ferocious, but never bite anyone. I am sure there have been people bit that were messing with them, tugging on a leg or trying to get a hook out of one. But I wonder if they will go out of their way to get you. A teenage friend got bit on the knee by a big snapper. He picked it up by the tail and didn't know they could stick their neck out that far. There was yellow goo oozing out from behind his knee cap, it was gross. I saw one shoot his head out at least a foot to grab a bullfrog, so when I pick one up I hold him as far away from my body as possible. I was always told by my grandpa that if a snapper ever got ahold of you they wouldn't let go until it thundered. Anyone else ever hear that one ?

MOPanfisher Posted August 1, 2017 Posted August 1, 2017 You can paralyze a snapping turtle if yu just reach into its mouth and grab it pink wiggly tongue. Yeah that's it.

Johnsfolly Posted August 2, 2017 Posted August 2, 2017 As a Masters student in Louisiana my friend went to catch chicken turtles with his buddy at a local farm pond. After catching a couple, his friend told him that he had caught an alligator snapping turtle. My friend asked him how he knew it was a big snapper. His buddy said that he was holding it's head. It seems that his buddy thought that he found a flat rock and he stood on top of it. Reaching down under this "rock" he caught a turtle. Turns out the rock was the snapping turtle and the "turtle" was the snapper's head. The two of them pulled the 70 lb turtle out of the pond. The turtle was donated to his school and may still be living there now.
Mitch f Posted August 2, 2017 Posted August 2, 2017 I heard a story of some guys that killed a big snapping turtle maybe 20-30 years ago. Upon examination, they found musket ball from the civil war embedded in his shell. Wives tail or not? snagged in outlet 3 1 "Honor is a man's gift to himself" Rob Roy McGregor

tho1mas Posted August 2, 2017 Posted August 2, 2017 Wives tail or not? You will have to check with Wrench on that one or wait until it thunders.
