Don't ever toss the first fish in the livewell, he may be a loner.  I have seen many first cast fish be the last ones.

Red at night, sailor delight.  Works for fishing too, front moving out.

Thanks, Winds from the West Proverbs:

Wind from the West, fish bite the best.
Wind from the East, fish bite the least.
Wind from the North, do not go forth.
Wind from the South blows bait in their mouth.

For those who have to drive a bit to go fishing the roadkill rule tends to be pretty reliable.

Never step on a boat with your left foot first.

When leaving a ramp never look behind you until the ramp is out of sight. Looking back at the ramp is a sign that you might not return.

Never bring a strung rod in the house.

Never have a line in the water when a loon cries.

Never lay your fishing hat on your bed.

Never rename a boat.

I have always relied on the, "book of fishing facts",  by Lester Kinderhook. Lester says, "the very best time to go fishing, is whenever you have the chance to go. " Lester also says that he developed his fishing skills by listening to what he had to say.

I assume, road kill is similar to cows standing in theory?

Just wondering if there any folklore about a strung rod?  I'm not finding much on it. Maybe safety?

I think the roadkill thing just indicates that alot of critters are moving around, and it assumes that the fish are also.   We made a run down to Norfork tailwater one February and there was a ton of dead critters on the road the whole way down.  It was indeed the best couple days I have ever had there.

Growing up I had a buddy that would always cut his baits off and reel the line in before taking his rods inside, he was adamant about it.  I never thought twice about carrying "loaded" rods in the house, and/or rigging them inside.....and I never paid a penalty for it that I know of. :)  Who knows though, maybe if I had heeded the magic I would have multiple record book catches on my resume.

I am pretty OCD about the hat thing, and Dion Hibdon told me that he was too.   If that hat touches a bed it goes in the trash.

They just sold some of Guido and Dion's stuff in an auction last week. Several hats were in the mix.
