Riverwhy Posted December 19, 2017 Posted December 19, 2017 Spent a few hours on the water Saturday. Water temperature was around 47 degrees and we had a pretty strong breeze from the west. Not much love on the Rock Crawler for black bass but the white bass were still active on the points. Anything shiny or white seemed to work. Big fish of the day was a 17.5 inch white. The average size of whites at LOZ is pretty darn good. Mitch f, 96 CHAMP, BilletHead and 4 others 7
shrapnel Posted December 19, 2017 Posted December 19, 2017 The average size is great. I just can't seem to find them.
Riverwhy Posted December 19, 2017 Author Posted December 19, 2017 I just follow the wind and throw lipless crank baits. Caught them everywhere from points to shallow coves in the shad balls. I'm strictly an amateur but I'm surprised the whites were that shallow with the water temperatures that cold. How cold does it need to get before they shut down? Johnsfolly 1

The guys that pretend to know it all (like me) can't catch them worth a crap. These mutts have some slightly different habits that I haven't learned about yet. I may need to take everything I know about actual White bass and throw it out the window. Mitch f 1
shrapnel Posted December 20, 2017 Posted December 20, 2017 The crappie fishing has been as good I have ever seen it the past month, and the black bass are doing what they should be now. I kinda tossed in the towel on the white's, but I would sure rather catch a mess of them than crappie.

Crappie fishing is for women and small children. They don't strike with authority, they don't jump, they don't pull hard. Just "tick" and crank 'em in. After about 10 it gets boring, so once I have enough to make a meal or two I'm done messing with them. conorsixtakc 1

Crappie are so much easier to find than whites and that is why I target them. I'd much rather catch good sized white bass over crappie for the fun factor, but they both eat well and I'll take whatever I can find the easiest. I've always done better on whites the closer to spring that it gets. I'd rather chase crappie in the winter and whites a little bit later. In the winter, I can chase main lake crappie and not die and then chase the white bass up the rivers in the spring as it starts to warm up and the bigger boats start to reappear.
fishinwrench Posted December 20, 2017 Posted December 20, 2017 Things you never hear a crappie fishermen say: "Holy crap, that one hit like a freight train, almost jerked the rod outta my hand". "He's going under the boat". "Get the net". "Woah baby, he's peeling drag". "Dang it! He broke me off". "This 6# flourocarbon breaks on the hook set". "Think they'll hit topwater?" "No no baby, don't jump". "These minnows are too small". "You need to speed up your retrieve". "I can't fix this myself". Things Crappie fishermen always say: "Have you tried pink?" "You gotta use a niblet". "You need niblets with sparkles". "Let's try some slip corkin". "They're hitting on a 7 count". "1/16oz is too heavy". "When we was in Mississippi.......". "Let's pull some cranks". "Sickle hooks are where it's at". "Another keeper". "I can fix this myself". "I screwed it up even worse, can you fix it before Friday?" Basfis Posted December 21, 2017 Posted December 21, 2017 And.... ” Want another piece of fish?” “man, these are good “ ”delicious “ ”yum” ...couldn't resist, crappie taste so good. I’m sure there is someone that doesn’t like eating them. Not that whites are bad, just a little more skill to prepare. A novice can clean and cook crappie with no bones or red meat.
