A one fiddy is more than capable of spearing a wave as well. Unless it's on the back of my boat with water in the wells and over 1/2 tank of fuel.

I know there are some water regulations and a water patrol but have seen some reckless looking operation in the past. To the point that I don't even fish the lakes for my own safety. Do you guys think mandatory training would help any?

My thinking is that IF he had been in a 18' boat with a 150 he would've looked out across that sea and elected to fish the canal that was closest. He may not have gotten a check but he'd be alot better off right now. When you're in a 21' Ranger with a 250....Shiiiiiiit, you're goin' for it. dtrs5kprs 1

I practically got banned from the Marine Dealers Assoc. meetings for making a strong case that "boater education" tests needed to be given before renting boats to tourists. Deadstream Posted January 7, 2018 Posted January 7, 2018 I have friends that rent Snowmobiles. They teach them basic safety before they head out. Start, Go ,Stop. Any damages are your responsibility and lies cost you double. They sign up and lie their asses off. My friend and his friend are getting rich(the repairman). Some basic training would be nice, I.E. red means left(port) you get the picture. One reason I spend my winters In Missouri/ Arkansas is because I can't sit in an Ice Shanty anymore with out the worry of a 100+ sled running over you. It happens.

It might change the way they do the things they have become accustomed to. They might have to adapt or fail. They usually aren't interested in making things better for everyone, they just want to keep things good for themselves. fishinwrench 1
Basfis Posted January 7, 2018 Posted January 7, 2018 MO has a boater license test deal now. It’s a step in the right direction. I learned boating from older guys in a bass club that valued their boat and safety. I routinely see guys older than the license cut off that clearly didn’t have the same opportunity. Full throttle and too much trim most of the time. See it in tourneys and just out on the lake. Night tournaments really show disregard for safety now that we all have nav at the helm. Never mind other boats and debris. It’s a mindset problem. I hope there’s a positive that comes from this tragedy. Champ188 1
MoCarp Posted January 7, 2018 Posted January 7, 2018 I think blasting about in a fog bank can be the issue.. 6 foot chop is dangerous alone... I grew up on the coast and fog is normal this time of year, causes some horrific car wrecks as well....you can be going a long and hit a fog bank and slow way down only to get slammed by someone....on the lake a hidden log would be all it would take....its sad loss of life happens....perhaps locator technology on a life vest? I am sure many an angler would pay a little more for that peace of mind MONKEYS? what monkeys?
