Quillback Posted January 14, 2018 Posted January 14, 2018 i think the bios tend to look at what is good for the fish, as in lots of shad, and we fishermen tend to look at what's good for the catching of fish. It will be interesting to see if a significant shad kill results in the fish becoming more bank oriented instead of roaming the mid-channel areas.
Hunter53 Posted January 14, 2018 Posted January 14, 2018 Up here our water gets WAY colder than 42. Yes we have a shad die off every year. It does not kill them all; not even close. Always seems to be way too many shad swimming in the summer up here.
ruthead Posted January 14, 2018 Posted January 14, 2018 The info that I don't find is how long does it take from time it reaches 42 degrees till the shad start dieing and then how long for them to sink and come through the dam. 2 days 2weeks??? You have gizzard shad as we do also. Down where the guys are talking here they have threadfin shad, smaller than gizzard. Hunter53 Posted January 15, 2018 Posted January 15, 2018 We have them both up this way too. We do have more gizzard shad though.

Had no idea they were in Nebraska. I am not too Far north of Table Rock and Bull Shoals and there are not any I am aware of in Stockton, Pomme and Truman. Thanks for the info, BilletHead I just figured from your profile you were from Nebraska. Reading this thread on the threadfin got me to wondering how far North they ranged. Guess your Fish and game does not know there are some up there. I bet they would like to know if there is a surviving population up there. Ellros Posted January 15, 2018 Posted January 15, 2018 Agreed, didn't think we hdh any threadfins in NE. Lots of Gizzard shad, and Merrit Reservoir has alewives, but I was not aware of any threadfins in NE.
Hunter53 Posted January 15, 2018 Posted January 15, 2018 Well heck I must be mistaken about the threadfin up here. I could have swore I have seen some. Did some quick searching and it appears that threadfin have been tried in Nebraska but supposedly they don't survive our winters. Must have been a while ago at a time when they tried to stock them up here that I saw them.
Dutch Posted January 15, 2018 Posted January 15, 2018 Table Rock is about as far north as threadfin can survive. We don't even have them in Stockton, Pomme de Terre, or Truman Lakes. MoCarp 1
