No I am not positive.  I got my information from an MDC research biologist who was doing a 10 year study on white bass.

That explains ALOT !

Somebody shoulda kicked that dude in the throat.   He goofed on multiple levels.

Been saying that for years.   And everybody thinks I'm a douchebag for saying it.

        Oh Snagged,

I have sent a text to him on this shad subject. We want his opinion on the shad dilemma. As far as MDC goes we know what he thinks about this. All i can figure is he is catching up on much needed sleep or out shooting his bb oops I mean pellet springer rifle :D,

None of the above.   Nobody around here knows how to drive apparently, and for some reason they always call ME. Happens every time it snows even a tiny bit.    And my wife wonders why I always question the thinking capacity of everyone.  Perfect example.

And it ain't a SPRINGER !

I don't know the science of it but the biggest enmasse shad kills I've witnessed have happened after a period of no dam generation.   A little current seems to help them survive.

see the above video, both have "threads" in their dorsal fin is more prominent in YOY gizzards than when they are older, its all about the mouth structures

         Good addition MoCarp,

I tied a couple young of the year clousers for the upcoming white bass flyfishing season. One is a threadfin and the other a gizzard. Which one is which?  Should i ust the gizzard to fish north and the threadfin south? . Again I find this an interesting thread. I hope you armchair biologists can prove we have the threadfin farther north. I too used to throw a net back in my younger years below Truman dam in LOZ. Seen others literally net tons of the slimy critters. Never seen a threadfin up there. Guess they may be a new thing or ran up the rivers from South and jumped the LOZ dam? I read where they once stocked Montrose with them but supposedly they died out.

The one on the left has a more rounded mouth so guess it is threadfin? You guys are just too scientific for me.  Shoot I will not eat tilapia the ones I see in the store look and smell too much like gizzard shad to me.

I won't eat them just because they scam us into thinking it's some kind of exotic fish.  I'll never eat those nasty things.
