Lancer09 Posted April 27, 2018 Posted April 27, 2018 Most of my tomatoes are now between 3 and 6 inches and in 4 inch plantable cardboard pots. Around 50 percent have roots working through the bottom of the pots getting to the trays where the water is. Peppers are a bit smaller but growing. Roots are coming out of the bottom of their 2 inch cardboard pots on the biggest ones. With noticeable growth each day I think tomatoes will go in the ground in 2 weeks. Peppers I'll keep in the greenhouse for the extra heat for another week or two after that. Still have to get a 6 burpee pink Brandywine from Wal-Mart and some hybrids from the HS plant sale but well on the way to rocking and rolling. Didn't lose a single mater in the mater tragedy of '18! Ready for some summer fish frys, fresh tomatoes and beers by the lake. BilletHead, tho1mas and ness 3
Lancer09 Posted April 30, 2018 Posted April 30, 2018 I'm an addict apparently. The Nixa Hardware had some good prices on some tomatoes I had been looking for this season. Grabbed a pair of brandywines, green zebra, pineapple, mr. Stripey, arkansas traveler, an unidentified large tomato, tomatillo, eggplant, anaheim chilis, rosemary, and basil. Then went over to the "Christian County Master Gardeners plant sale" Grabbed a pineapple tomato there along with a German Green tomato also. My dad also picked up a pair of German Striped tomatoes for me a couple days ago when he helped out at a local greenhouse in Lawrence. If these produce half as well as everything did last year I'm going to have more produce than I know what to do with, but I have decided to treat this, along with the next few years as experimental to figure out what works for me, strains and everything else so I can start saving seeds instead of having to buy plants. All of my seed started plants are more full of leaves at 6 inches now than many of these are at 8 to 10 inches. Going to pick up a few more brandywines and a couple cherry tomatoes and that will be all. Do have to get my squash and zuchini going as well. I got in trouble for only caring about the peppers and tomatoes the other day so this week I'll have to spend some time working around with everything else. Need to get a small trellis fence for the peas set up, more soil on the potatoes, and fertilize everything as well. Looking to get almost everything in the ground this coming weekend. BilletHead Posted May 3, 2018 Posted May 3, 2018 I had to get tomatoes in the ground last weekend. Tired of babysitting them in the starting and transfer pots. Some were so long and lanky and ready to bend and break. Planted some two foot deep in the self wicking tubs. Ended up with fourteen of the wickers completed. To the right of the lettuce bed more tomatoes planted in a bed. Speaking of lettuce, Will be gifting some of this 😀. Have peppers and herbs in pots awaiting their places in the garden, BilletHead tho1mas, Lancer09, ness and 1 other 4 "We have met the enemy and it is us", Pogo If you compete with your fellow anglers, you become their competitor, If you help them you become their friend" Lefty Kreh " Never display your knowledge, you only share it" Lefty Kreh "Eat more bass and there will be more room for walleye to grow!" fishinwrench Posted May 3, 2018 Posted May 3, 2018 Green thumb related... Sugarbritches decides that she wants this little tree moved from across the road to the front yard. Didn't look like a big deal, and I'm always looking to rack up some brownie points, so I said "Sure Babe, I'll dig it up this evening". So after 2 carb jobs, a gearcase rebuild, and a complete service on a 115 Merc 4-stroke and the toon it was hanging on I grabbed a sharp-shooter and waded into Ticktown to uproot this little MF'er. Well who knew that the root system on such a "sprout" was going to be 3 times the size of the tree? And since I can't even drive a tent stake anywhere on my property it wasn't long until I was ready to bail on this promised project. So as I'm standing there with sore hand bones, seed ticks crawling towards my balls, and knowing that once this little POS was unearthed I still had yet another hole to dig in the yard to plant it, I thought "this is rediculous, I have a badass 4x4 and a tow strap....just get the stupid tree for crying out loud". So I loosened up the dirt/rocks, threw 3 half hitches around the base with the tow strap, hit the 4Low button and gave it the old country boy tug. Well, the strap skinned the bark off the tree pretty good, but by God I finished the job. The Princess is NOT very happy. 😒 Do you think it will live ? Deadstream 1
snagged in outlet 3 Posted May 3, 2018 Posted May 3, 2018 If it's a redbud it's not likely. Better job than my neighbor though. He pulled the rear bumper off a Honda SUV trying to do that. I still remind him of it all the time. Cracked me up.
ness Posted May 3, 2018 Author Posted May 3, 2018 I put my lettuce and tomatoes in the ground last weekend too. Lettuce always looks so unhappy for the first few days after transplanting that I didn't bother to take a picture. Got about a dozen maters in pots to give to others. Pretty bad rain storm last night but no hail and everything looked great this morning. 17 minutes ago, fishinwrench said: Do you think it will live ? What, without bark? fishinwrench Posted May 3, 2018 Posted May 3, 2018 Not what I wanted to hear. So.....if I want to kill a bunch of ground clutter around here....all I have to do is walk around with a machete and skin some bark? That's actually really good news! Deadstream and BilletHead 1 1

ness Posted May 3, 2018 Author Posted May 3, 2018 Yep -- I spent some time in the cave, but it was mostly south and east of where I am. Tornado in Belton, which is south, but little damage. Some big trees down around town. John
