Very touchy subject, but IMO just saying something stupid (or scary) shouldn't be a felony.  Kids (and grownups) say crazy stuff all the time.  My wife says she is gonna knock my teeth out at least twice a week.  She also says "I'm gonna kill that #+&@$*!  dog" about 4 times per week.   If her lawyer fees wouldn't come out of my pocket I'd have her arrested !

When the day comes that we can be thrown in jail for the things we say...... I'm a goner!

I think they should interview the kid and see how serious he is, do a background check, maybe a mental evaluation.  If it was just a goofy kid thing then I don't see a need to charge him with a felony.

That being said, if they let the kid go and he comes back as a shooter, then all heck is going to break out about the authorities not doing their job.  Not to mention loss of life.  Kind of sad to see things come to this, but that's the new reality.

Still.....Threatening to do something, and actually doing it are drastically different things.   A felony conviction at a young age, just for running your mouth, is cruel and unusual punishment.  That's no way for a country to treat it's citizens.

Kid at my daughters school walks in and throws his bag in a class and says there's a bomb inside. Evacuate the entire school and have them bussed to the high school while they clear her school. Then once it's clear they have to bus all the kids back. Lots of people involved, lots of parents trying to get to their kids, lots of time wasted. And they are just supposed to give little Johnny a slap on the wrist and let it go? Nah. Screw the little twerp. Let him waste away someplace else.

But the difference is that if I would have pulled a stunt like that when I was younger the school and police would have been my least worry.

That's a little bit different from what I'm talking about, but ok.

We're gonna have alot of "felons" who need jobs and loans in about 10 years.  I mean ALOT.

Seems avoidable with some very basic thinking before acting.

Ever heard a felon claim their choice was brilliant? No different than the characters Scooby-Doo caught....

Good point. I have a story I could share that would probably change your mind.....but it is very long, and this forum isn't the place for it.

Schools are an odd combination of zero tolerance and unwillingness to prosecute.  There a ton of difference between my wife threatening to beat my butt and me threatening to beat someone's butt at the mall.

Why?  Domestic violence is supposedly a huge problem in our society.
