I doubt its the reeds, i put Chris Carson reeds in it about 18 months ago Sure, if you want. Just be gentle with those precious high dollar O-rings.
aarchdale@coresleep.com Posted April 26, 2018 Author Posted April 26, 2018 I think i got it figured out. I got a inline spark tester and #2 wasnt getting much fire just barely a little light. hooked it up to the other cylinders and it a big nice bright light. Swapped some coils around and found that one isnt working worth a hoot. When i took the actual plug out i could see it getting fire but i guess it wasnt enough
fishinwrench Posted April 26, 2018 Posted April 26, 2018 Swap the coils and see if it moves the problem. Or did you already confirm that? If not then it's the primary voltage to the coil.
aarchdale@coresleep.com Posted April 26, 2018 Author Posted April 26, 2018 yep thats what i did. cylinder #2 came back to life. Off to spend another $175
nomolites Posted April 4, 2019 Posted April 4, 2019 Another for you Wrench... Was down last weekend and ran up to the top of the Gravi to catch some whites(caught 20 but only three big females) and after I got back to the 4 mm and got the boat on the lift I smelled fuel. Got to looking and sure enough it was dripping out from above so pulled the cowling and gas was pooled a bit at the low point in the rear. Fired it up and saw nothing until I gave it a few revs and then it started dripping out of the fitting at the bottom of the starboard fuel rail(150 OPTI) Looked up the drawing and see 2 o rings and commenced to looking for parts, and guess what? Discontinued. Had to hit the road Monday early and stopped in a mom and pop repair shop in Pekin Il I happened to be passing by and the lady helping me was able to find a set in their “discontinued pile”. So there is that, anyway. Will likely replace them this weekend and see if that corrects the issue, but I am sure wondering what’s next and will I be able to get parts... Mike
aarchdale@coresleep.com Posted April 4, 2019 Author Posted April 4, 2019 I had to replace a couple of those O rings too. I found the at Ulrich in Branson west for $6 a piece......As of last weekend i noticed a little bit of oil coming out of my oil pump. After some research it appears that these pumps are non serviceable per Mercury and they suggest buying a new $700-800 pump. But there is plenty of info out there with guys saying they replaced the O ring in the pump for 59 cents and have been trouble free for years

Mike Your leak may be a cracked fuel cooler (pretty common). You'll have to remove the lower cowling to access the bottom of the fuel/air rail, so you'll find out when you get there. Be sure to de-pressurize the system before pulling that fitting from the fuel rail (if you do it).... or you might get hurt.
fishinwrench Posted April 4, 2019 Posted April 4, 2019 I'm gonna pull the plug on Optimax's, effective this year. I like happy customers and after unending study and assumed successful repairs I have determined that I can't keep Optimax owners happy and know beyond a shadow of doubt that the engine will run a full day+ after leaving my shop. Continuing to attempt fixing the unfixable will do nothing but ruin my reputation and cause people to not trust me. It's a poorly designed engine in the aspect that it is impossible for me, or anybody else, to properly diagnose 80% of the time, and then when I DO FINALLY figure it out (or THINK I have it figured out)....parts are either unavailable or rediculously priced. So other than regular service that is unrelated to the fuel/air/oil injection systems, folks are just gonna have to take them to their favorite Mercury dealer so they can cuss and be disappointed at THEM instead of ME. I have enough "good motors" to work on that I don't have to work on those impossible pieces of crap if I don't want to..... And I don't want to. I'm not just picking on Mercury either, Yamaha HPDI's are getting kicked to the curb also. 😋 snagged in outlet 3, Greasy B and Gavin 3
Gavin Posted April 4, 2019 Posted April 4, 2019 Good move. Good customer service starts with good customer selection, realistic expectations, and defined prices. If not what you want to do send down the street with no referal. Still looking for a good 5hp 2 Stroke if you find one. fishinwrench and Daryk Campbell Sr 1 1
