I believe this past summer I invited you for a trip on the James.

I meant the corporate fishing trips where they go out and stay on an island.

I do hope I get another invite from you. Maybe when we go white bass fishing!

I'm in on a White Bass trip.  Invited or not.

For as long as I can remember (way before I'd ever heard of a such a thing as a "Bucket List") my three dream destinations were to see the Celtics in Boston Garden, the Red Sox in Fenway and The Masters.

I spent part of my life living and working in the Boston area.  Saw one game at the old Garden, that was back in the day when people were allowed to smoke inside.  Had a seat up in the nose bleed section, where all the smoke was hanging, can't say it was a good experience.  That place was a dump.

Probably have seen 15 Red Sox games at Fenway, if I ever go back. I'd like to sit somewhere in those new seats they put on top the wall.

Never been to the Masters, I was stationed at Fort Gordon for a year, never have had a desire to go back to Disgusta GA.  The course itself is beautiful, but that town was a dump.  Maybe it has changed since then for the better.  Back then, this was 1979, the entrance to the course was right off a 4 lane road that was nothing but strip malls and urban sprawl, you'd never know looking at the entrance that the course was back there.

Yeah, I knew that both the Garden and Fenway were said to be rat infested dumps clear back in the 70's and can clearly remember the smoky haze in the Garden on TV and in photos.  Of course since smoking was allowed, if not encouraged, back then (even in movie theaters for crying out loud) I don't remember it ever really bothering me that much.  It was just the way it was when I was growing up.

And to think that nowadays I lose my mind when I can detect cigarette smoke on the driving range at the golf course!

How things have changed in my 66 years.

I've actually been to "Disgusta", Ga. once.  Back in the 80's I was attending a two week PGA Business School in Columbia, SC. and three of us rented a car for the weekend and drove over there to "see" Augusta National.  Yeah, right.  All we saw was the entrance which was just like you described and not a Magnolia in sight.  We must have driven around that place for over an hour, convinced that there must be somewhere where we could at least catch a glimpse of the course.

Not a chance.  That place is like its own country - WITH a wall!

I didn’t know you were a PGA pro, Vern.  Nice.

In a previous life and a long time ago.

In fact, I never actually got my Class A card as I kinda soured on the whole deal before I finished the apprentice program.

Probably the best thing that ever happened to me though cause once I moved on I made more money, worked way less hours and actually got to start playing golf again.

That golf business thing is a tough gig and I've never really missed it.

Kinda like the guy that loves to spend time at the lake and loves to fish so he buys a resort to fulfill his dream.

What could be better right?

Of course then he spends every waking moment for the rest of his life painting cabins, fixing plumbing and repairing his dock so everybody else can have a good time!

No offense to guys like Phil and Bill and all the others who do such a fantastic job of providing great fun and top of the line accommodations for losers like me but I think they know where I'm coming from.
