darn Area - short report - 1/18/19

Have been out in the late afternoon the last few days with poor to minimal success.  Fish and bait are still were they have been the last couple weeks but were not cooperating like they did before Christmas.  Taking the lead for a recent thread from Dock-in-it I decided to go out in the morning (not as early as he did) but early enough to be too cold for fishing.  The bite was much better this morning.  Caught fish in 40 fow on the bottom on the flats near the roll off to the abyss.  There were others places were fish were on the bottom in 60 fow but these were not interested.  The fish were tight to the bottom to the point that I only knew for sure they were there is when they came up to take the bait and I could see that on the graph.  Used slab spoon only as I was not interested in losing the ice jig that close to the bottom.  WT 46.2.  Had to quit when the wind/cold increased and got to me.

Good deal. I struggled this morning. I was around a bunch of shad, but the bass sightings were few and far between. I lost an ice jig today, so your trip was even more cost effective.

Bobby, I wanted  to get some new batteries for my trout boat so I scooted up to Eagle Rock and Fished for 3 hrs. yesterday starting at 9;30,  I was already at Golden getting the batteries, so the Eagle Rock ramp was but a hop, skip and jump..  Could not get them to bite the Ned or a jerkbait at all and got lucky seeing some swirls in the middle of Viney Creek.  Caught 7 swimming a Keitech, only one decent keep, rest in the 14 to 15 inch range, mostly K's.  Did catch 2 LM in the fray.

Surface temps at 46-47 degree.   These fish were out near the mouth right in the middle.  After they quit I zoomed over them and really could not see them deep.  It's only about 40' where they were but they were moving.  I started swimming the bait right under the surface and caught a couple but the majority I counted down about 20.  There were a few small groups of shad right on the surface, and that was all the bait I could find.  Wind started whipping in there and that was that.

Yep I was in the Hideaway Marina area yesterday, I marked fish in the same depth as well (40 +ft) caught a couple in the 40 range on a step before a 100 ft drop. 1 small sm and a squeaker keeper spot. 1/2oz gold Binks spoon .

I did throw a jerk bait for a little while, it is difficult to throw when you are only seeing fish over 60ft of water. Only a half hearted attempt.

Cloudy, a nice chop on the water, I don't get it?

Prob better to release those deep fish immediately than to measure and photograph. Just hate the see those big spots die.

You really do want to be pretty quick with them.  Some of these fish however are coming way up in the water column, going up and down and down and up.  The other day in Viney they were right at the top of the column.   A week or so ago they were 70'.  When those guys come up you got to get them back quick or needle them.

Nothing to do with any of that, but on MLF the other day they said the average time the fish was out of the water with them was 28 seconds.  Man, that is just terrific.
