Russian sage and lithum do real well here on the south side. My wife has a bunch of perennials that do well there. Stick to natives and they’ll do better than anything else. Deer won’t bother them as much either.

Not sure that Charli is going to allow it though. I'm sure she will like to chew on those balls growing on that plant. Maybe the peppers will teach her a lesson. That’s a great way to go. Do a 4x4’ minimum, 10 inches or more deep, fill it with a good soil/compost mix, and pick a spot that will get lots of sun I roughly follow the Square Foot Gardening system and can get a lot out of a little space with that method. That’s exactly what it is. 4x4. And about 2ft deep. Little tall but maybe that will help keep DA out. Probably not though. I have a super sunny spot picked out. Just need dirt.

I did Invisible Fence to keep my mutts out of the beds and in the yard. Glad I did, but that’s not for everybody. John
MOPanfisher Posted February 2, 2019 Posted February 2, 2019 Working on my cold frame this weekend. Have always just covered it with some plastic sheeting that I can roll back when it is warm. However it is a pain at times. Am thinking I want to either do an arch with some half inch cpvc and some fittings or a sloped cover. Any experiences I can utilize. The arched system seems cool, but a "flat" sloped cover I can simply prop seems pretry easy. Even considering a longer lasting one with pvc panels.from.lowes.
ness Posted February 2, 2019 Author Posted February 2, 2019 I made mine in the traditional style with a hinged, sloping lid. It was a wooden frame with thick plastic tacked down with furring strips. Worked pretty well but I just didn’t use it much. Hoops are great — I’ve only used them over beds — but it’s a bit of a hassle containing the loose plastic. John
MOPanfisher Posted February 2, 2019 Posted February 2, 2019 Yeah, I am gonna look at those clear pvc panels if I ever get to town again, seems like sometimes I am there twice a week other times when I want something it will be 2 weeks. Not willing to drive to spfld just for that. Although I need a new grill also so . . . I could look at pellet grills too.

jdmidwest Posted February 16, 2019 Posted February 16, 2019 Tried to get the beds dried out this week and covered, did not happen. But Billethead gave me the idea, I have jiffy pots and stuff to start lettuce inside. May do that tonight with the sleet downpour coming down tonight.
