I wash the hide out of the alum/salt real well. I have hides I have done years ago and have no "rot". I am not going to get into the harsh chemical tanning and know brain tanners. Not going to go through that either its a mess .I have a couple brain tanned and smoked hides. They are amazing pieces of work. I use borax when doing my buck tails. I thought about the sanding the hides. When I strip out these I may. Right now I am just admiring the work I have put in these before I cut them up. Once I make that first slice there is no going back,

Very nice work as usual Marty.  Envious of your skills and wish I had a quarter of the talent...

I suppose I could always try to learn... maybe when I finally get to stop working lol.

When you slow down from going 90 to 100 MPH all the time you can learn :) hahahhahah.

Why don’t you use your fingers? A half hour of practice with someone who knows how and you will never need any of those gizmos. Greg “Sparkleminnow” Coffey taught me how.

I've been lucky to hang around some old timer fly guys through the years because of my dad.  Lee Wulff tied a Royal Wulff for me when I was a kid while on a trip to Livingston MT with my dad.  He tied it in his hands without a vice.  I spent 12 days up there fly fishing with my dad, Lee, his wife and Dan Bailey.  Those guys were also nice enough to slip me a beer every now and again even though I was underage.

Even without the beer, that had to be one fantastic fishing trip.
