Would be really nice if it could be done. It COULD be done but would cost a fair amount dollars and effort to do so. Not sure who would pony up the dough for that study. Johnny.....you out there?

No need, if the fish could just be immediately scored and released.....And they could.....at far less of a cost than a release boat.

Not sure about this lake but fish a tournament I kenora Canada every year.  I had a chance to talk to a DNR ( Department of natural resources) about the same thing.  I was told by them that if a fish caught is moved from it's area, like in a tournament,  unless it is returned close the fish will burn up so much energy trying to get back , and most likely will die.  I was also told that there is about a 2 hour window for the fish.  At this tournament the  biologist will take random fish and take samples of the fish.  Each person must say what area of the lake the fish was caught.  Also in Canada there is a time of year right around the fish are on beds there is a no keep law on bass.  Small mouth or large mouth.  You can catch them but you better not get caught with one in the live well.

I think Canada has it right with not keeping bass during the spawn. That seems like a logical compromise everyone could agree on, say from March 20 thru May 20. Catch all you want but shut off the live well. It would only help everyone in the end.

That just isn't feasible in the BBT format. You can't have people weighing their own fish and have it as an official score. You need a 3rd party aka a "ref" in the boat with them. There were something like 700+ boats this past weekend.  It works for MLF and could work for BASS as they already have marshals in the boat.  But it ain't happenin' in these amateur events like the BBT.

Thats where the word compromise comes in, BBT events aren't held during those 2 months. What difference does it make whether you catch the biggest fish in April or October.

For the cost of a release boat, and a truck to pull it, you don't think they could make it happen ?

We're talking 60k here !   That's a pretty good incentive to change a format.  It would buy a shitton of perfectly calibrated Bluetooth scales and develop an app that would be real hard to trick.  

Let's stop ignoring the fact that this is 2019 for just a minute.  I mean, for 39.95 you can change the temperature in your home and monitor what's going on there, including your wife's heart rate and ovular contractions .... from the opposite side of the planet.  😄

You would also have the option of having the angler bring the fish to the official scales. If it's big enough to possibly take the lead then it would need to be brought to the scales. For verification. So the spectators can see it. So everybody can see it. And you still get your grip and grin chest thumping moment. Not that I'm against that either because that makes some great memories and publicity.
