Spent many years around Sacville. Funny depending on where you were. Sacville was pronounced sackville but the river was pronounced sock river.

Back then we waded the river catching plenty Bass that made Hot Grease Bath. Did plenty swimming in it and I almost drowned it was bad enough I was unconscious. Really got to know women back then. Farm Girls were not shy. LOL

I have and still do use both ways, Sack and Sock.  Just depends on my mood I guess.

How about Courtois River??  My wife had a friend from France and she cracked up at the local pronunciation.

Curtoys, isn't it?

Kinda like Gravois

It is named after the Sauk Indians, so I would ideally say it's "sock", but it sure doesn't look that way.  Nothing I can find online says any different.

Courtois is "Co-to-way" even though it's probably named after a French fellow and should be "Coo-Twa"

As long as when you say it, whomever you are saying it to know where you are talking about it doesn't matter.  Kind of like the umpteen ways I have heard Pomme de Terre pronounced.   My personal favorite is Pumley Tarr, but again since i knew exactly what they were speaking of it worked just fine.
