JohnP Posted January 19, 2020 Posted January 19, 2020 Been a very slow, lower than the normal low #'s birds seen this season atleast for me and everyone else I've talked to. Ponds that normally produce havent this year and on good cold front / post cold front days that we'd expect to see birds around have been blanked. Seeing a few birds here and there but no real #'s. What few birds I have seen have been mallards and hooded megansers and a few GWT. Surprised I havent seen a single gadwall this season and that's what I usually see the the majority of. slothman Posted January 19, 2020 Posted January 19, 2020 It has been a really weird year. I think that perhaps the birds are shifting their migration routes and we aren’t seeing them in traditional locations. 🤷♂️
curtisce Posted January 20, 2020 Posted January 20, 2020 The disappointing part of this season was just not seeing the numbers of birds we usual see. One day I only saw 4 birds the whole morning. Still managed to shoot some though Johnsfolly, BilletHead, JohnP and 1 other 4 The answer may not lie at the bottom of a glass, but you should always check

Old dog 417 Posted January 20, 2020 Posted January 20, 2020 We had a mixed bag this year. Better than last year but...just when we thought it was gonna break loose and meet our expectations (Right after Christmas) it shut down to an occasional merganser or nothing. Best outing since then was these 3 and it took 3 of us to take them in 3 hours! What is there...only eleven days left?....At least we're not froze out yet! Up until this weekend there was still open water in Nebraska and Iowa..I mean come on. Of course some birds just go based on the photoperiod, but I think December 29th was the only big migration day this year--and that was mediocre at best. I saw probably 5k birds, all high-fliers, that day. Last year it was November 18th--and I saw probably 30k birds flying. Hell, it was 55 on January 5th where I was hunting. Last year it was all locked up. That should explain everything. Still had a good season but I think people are looking way too much into it. DADAKOTA Posted February 2, 2020 Posted February 2, 2020 Birds were more spread out since MDC areas had no food. Those that adapted had banner seasons. Those that didn't complained. Limits of mallards still available on the last day.
