This an heirloom big beef.  About twice the size of when it went in the ground.  When it warms up we'll see some growth!  The Cherokee purples are about the same size and are also wearing blooms.  Which I will not be pinching off!  Crooked neck squash in the background.  There's a hill of zucchini at about the same stage too.

If you don't get those bottom leaves out of the dirt, it's not gonna matter if you pinched or not :D

Yeah, I noticed they're getting a little muddy.  They've had a trim now.

This weather.  Swarms of buffalo gnats are coming out again this year.  2 nailed me on the jaw while I was out this afternoon loading up for the river this weekend.  Big ole welps.

Those things killed me last year.  Couldn’t go to my favorite urban pond because there was millions of them.  Even with a head net they would borrow under it and bite like crazy.

I haven't gardened since the 90's. In Eureka, the house we owned was built on the side of a 45 degree rock pile and the deer ate anything except bitter flowers.

Nancy and I use pots on the patio. In our new place we have added pots and put in a few other items. The tomatoes are bush style cherry. The cumbers are a bush style pickle variety. The peas are sugar snaps. The herbs will include basil, which right now has just germinated.

Note: The parsley is a holdover from last year and I am fighting it. It wants to bolt. I may give up and replant. The other herbs, except the basil, all survived the winter as well. I will also thin the cukes and tomatoes shortly.

You probably know this but pinching off the flowering part will slow the bolting down.

Been kinda bummed about the garden because all the cold/cool weather has stalled everything out. Gave everything a dose of Miracle Grow last weekend. Finally got temps up over 65 this week. Between that and the feeding things just seemed to pop the second half of this week. Been pulling a few small radishes, lettuce is getting fairly close. Still have one sickly looking tomato though -- a Gold Rush Currant, my first try with a currant tomato. Won't be able to replace that if it croaks so may go get another Sun Gold cherry to replace it this weekend if they still have them at the nursery. 

Swiss chard and beets planted 4/11 are popping, but slooow. Succession planting of lettuce was done 4/25 and there's barely any action. Sugar Bon snap peas never germinated so replanted that section with Sugar Ann on 5/8, but they're taking their sweet time.  One section of bush beans (Dragon Tongue) looks great, the other section (Kentucky Wonder Bush) is sparse. Ground cherries got singed by the frost 5/9 and are looking pretty rough. 

Lost about ¾ of our last gooseberry bush over the winter. Have a branch buried in a pot of soil and it's starting to root. Will transplant that at some point -- need to research that some.

Last night we finally got the rain they've been threatening since Tuesday. Warmer weather is coming too. I'll probably be a lot happier with what I see out there in a few days.
