N9BOW Posted March 3, 2020 Author Posted March 3, 2020 Drove home from Mtn Home, left a 9:00 am. Every Walmart parking lot on the way home was full! They were full at times when you would expect to see empty parking lots....People get it!!!! Do you???? If you are behind the curve to get some things to shelter in place.?? Why not? take steps now so you don’t have to shop in times of then chaos, that’s likely too come to a town near you? If you don’t have to go out because of Covid-19 you might want to get busy!....Consider the alternatives! Ok....Give me crap about fear mongering.. I’ve gotten it already!!!. that’s fine good luck to you my friend! Wish you well in any eventuality!!!! For me and mine were just in watch mode.... no stress here!I truly hope you have no stress and are set to weather the possible storm of human panic....even if the epidemiology turns out to be more minimal 😎 The herd can be a bit erratic! oneshot Posted March 4, 2020 Posted March 4, 2020 We have plenty in the Freezer. Before we had Electricity we would Can a lot. Use to cure lots of meat. Most was fresh. We canned 3 Deer one time that was just too much. But we also had about 100 pounds of Elk that my wife got on shares. oneshot N9BOW 1
jdmidwest Posted March 4, 2020 Posted March 4, 2020 Why bother canning dry goods? They are stable in the package they ship in for several years. Just put them in a dry pantry. I see the need for canning them if you brought them out of a garden un packaged tjm 1 "Life has become immeasurably better since I have been forced to stop taking it seriously." — Hunter S. Thompson
MOPanfisher Posted March 4, 2020 Posted March 4, 2020 Cool, I will takes my chances. I can order a bag or dried beans or rice and the ups guy will kick it out at my door. Dry goods don't need any other care except be placed in a cool dry place, unless you are thinking years instead of Corona length. Heck if so just vacuum seal them an drop in a freezer. I am.more worried about if I have enough corn meal to fry fish with, oh heck I will just grill them. tjm 1

The mason jars are basically a way to make pulling out dinner serving easier than wrestling a 25 or 50 lb bag. We are not canning in the traditional sense. Just taking the pasta, black bean, soup beans, rice and corn and adding a silica packet to the jar. The jars extend the life out to 20-25 years. Daryk Campbell Sr and BilletHead 2

I don’t have a vacuum sealer that’s a good solution too. We had jars on hand so they have bee put to use. BilletHead and nomolites 2
oneshot 1 Posted March 4, 2020 Posted March 4, 2020 Only thing with Dry Grains is Weevil. We use to have them at the Bakery and would spray the Augers and Stuff. When I was cleaning Grain I would catch Bugs drawn out in the Shaker. And Spray there. Best way around home was to Freeze. My wife would can meals like Chile, Stew and stuff like that. oneshot
