That's sort of what I'm trying to say about my rig. I have scaled my boat to see exactly what it weighs, but it isn't pulling that I notice the big difference, it's stopping and just general handling. With my 2005 1/2 ton, or the 08 1/2 ton Yukon, I could feel the boat kind of push the truck. It wasn't bad, or unsafe, but man, when I went to the 3/4 ton and all of that push and sway is gone, it just feels so much more solid. It's the suspension, not the drivetrain that I like about the 3/4 ton.

Could be the tires too. A lot of half tons come with P rated car tires. Swap them for real truck tires, LTs with E load range, and pump them up hard (50-60 psi). Makes a big difference.

All of those reasons are why I bought a 3/4 ton Cummins.  Go when I want to go, stop when I want to stop.

My truck tows a lot of things besides the boat, and it tows them safely.

Thanks for the insights.  It turns out to be a mute point.  The best deal I could find was going to hit me for $10,000 per year depreciation.  I’ve only got 22000 miles on my truck so I’m going to pass on a new one and keep on keeping on.

I decided to try the 3.23 with a 5.3 V8 motor.  I searched all over for what I wanted and only found one truck.  It was in Blue Springs.  I drove up to have a look and wound up buying it.  I have pulled the boat to Cape Fair and Stockton State Park.  It did a good job.

After all these years I still don't think Ford has figured out how to design a rear diff.

I have a slight grade of gravel pulling into my place.  Guys come in pulling boats with Chevy's, Dodge's, Toyota's, and Jeeps... and never slip a tire.   But EVERY single Ford comes in slinging gravel from the passenger side rear and struggling to get over that little hump.   Even the dually's.   It's kinda irritating honestly, because I pay for that gravel and I'd kinda like to keep it in my driveway and not out in the middle of Cook Rd.

I've contemplated putting a sign up 50' from the driveway that says

"Ford owners, please engage 4WD NOW"

And of course if you tease them about it you always hear the same line of BS....."IT'S ALL THAT POWER, MAN".

What good is power if you can't put it where it belongs....On the ground!

I never knew that.  Might explain the skid marks on the passenger side of the ramps.  I always assumed it was from two wheel drive trucks.

A crap load of 99-06 GMs came with the G80 locking diff, which work quite well, but have a bad reputation for grenading, since the things shock load every time they engage.

Ford had a Traction-Lok LSD in the 8.8, that works pretty good when new, but once they get some mileage on them, might as well be an open diff. Not sure what the newer trucks come with.

If you ever wanna get under the skin of a die hard Chevy drag racer, ask them what rear diff they run. 90% chance of it being a Ford 9", even if they don't admit it.
