Head to the Lew's store in Springfield when it re-opens after lockdown. They always have great In-store deals on closeouts or reconditioned reels. I'm a big fan of the regular BB-1 series. I prefer simple centrifugal brakes, and a minimum of bells and whistles, and that model has what I need in a reel, along with superb casting distance. The Tournament Pro is a great reel as well. Diawa, Shimano and Abu all make good reels, but I can't say enough about how the guys at Lews treat their customers. Out of 20+ reels, I've had two small issues, and both times, I dropped them off at lews and had them waiting on me by the time I got back to STL from Bull Shoals. Great products, with national headquarters right here. Its a no brainer to me.

Was gifted a Shimano slx. Nice reel 👍  ,better than I had expected for what they sell them for.  Simple to adjust, and no noise whatsoever. I also recommend Quantum Icon PT. Can get them for a really great price on eBay. Think around $50 last time I bought some. Depends if you like small reels with small spools, slx, or a little bit bigger reel with a larger spool ,Icon.  My big hands like the feel of the Icon over the slx, so I put the slx on a pistol grip rod and it performs flawlessly

If you want a pitching reel, the Lew's Jason Christie is hard to beat. Walmart special at around $70. Can find them cheaper on eBay. We're running about six of them now, since 2017.

2nd the Lew’s recco.  Scheels had the Mach Speed on sale last work for $50 and that’s a heck of a deal- I ordered 2.

But let me throw another idea your way too:  Piscifun Fantom Carbon for $72 on Amazon.   I took a chance and ordered one a couple months ago just to check it out.  Very impressed- dual breaking system- it’s very smooth, extremely adjustable, and in my mind the best reel for under $120.

I got a Chinese reel for $16 a few months before the virus.  ITs called a YOLO and thats all i know but it is an amazing little reel, casts a mile. Not sure if it will hold up, but ill give it hell this year and find out.    Besides the Tatula, the LFS and BB1's are at the top of my list.   I did buy a 13 fishing $100 reel and it just flat sucks.

I tried a friend’s 13 Fishing reel- I wanted to like it so much because I love the design.  But it sucked!
