Quillback Posted May 13, 2020 Posted May 13, 2020 I'm all righty with reels, I don't even think about it. I could use a lefty bait caster, but I would have to use them all the time, I could not have a couple of lefties on the deck and a couple of righties.

When I finally got a spinner it was natural to reel left handed. Bait caster a little while after that and went left handed again. Although I can reel right handed but I don't see where switching hands is good. Plus I like my dominate hand working the rod. That's weird that you're good to go with spinners but not baitcast. Funny thing, fly reels were normally set up for right hand reeling at first. If you fished the other way, the click or the drag needed switched over. You switched hands to play a fish to let the reel do the work. I thought that was odd when I was young and started fly fishing coming off of spin fishing, I started setting up my reels for left hand reeling. I still have some old Herter's, Martins, and Horrocks Ibbotson reels that are right hand reel only. The automatics were great and worked either way. snagged in outlet 3 1 "Life has become immeasurably better since I have been forced to stop taking it seriously." — Hunter S. Thompson

tjm Posted May 15, 2020 Posted May 15, 2020 The salt guys will tell you reel with your dominate/strong hand. They believe you are so much better coordinated that way and that the hand strength makes big difference with big fish. Saw a long thread on the subject recently on another forum and every salt angler and guide on that forum said reel with the strong hand. I don't think it'd matter at all to me, either hand can reel, but then I never had a 100# fish on either.

Mitch f Posted May 15, 2020 Posted May 15, 2020 Switching hands is so natural to me anymore I don’t think about it. Even though it is a wasted motion. It takes what?....a forth of a second more? Flysmallie 1 "Honor is a man's gift to himself" Rob Roy McGregor
liphunter Posted May 15, 2020 Posted May 15, 2020 I am the same way Mitch. That's on a bait caster. But on on the spinning real, I cast with the right hand and real with the left. I don't switch hands. I don't even think about either action. I bet others do that as well. Mitch f and Daryk Campbell Sr 2 Luck is where preparation meets opportunity...... Members jimalert3 Posted May 15, 2020 Members Posted May 15, 2020 I'm right handed but learned to cast about 70 years ago and it's great.
