MoCarp Posted September 22, 2020 Posted September 22, 2020 I loved squirrel hunting, still hunting with a call, stalking and even with a dog...used an old pump Winchester 20g youth model I sold and still regret... have a limited marlin 60 with the 22” barrel thinking of getting chiappa over under in 22/410 or 20 or a good 410 pump... feel free to suggest your favorites , nothing more awesomeness than old guns handed down BilletHead and Johnsfolly 2 MONKEYS? what monkeys?
Johnsfolly Posted September 22, 2020 Posted September 22, 2020 I have seen them previously and always thought that the 22/410 over and under would be a cool squirrel gun. I use 22 LR, 22 mag, 20 ga, and 12 ga for squirrels depending upon my mood at the time. Really love the rifle. I am looking to get into an airgun for the bushytails.
FishnDave Posted September 22, 2020 Posted September 22, 2020 In Iowa we had mostly Red Fox Squirrels. Here in STL I've only seen Gray's, and there are 4 of them chasing each other around the trunk of the tree right outside my back deck. Where did you manage to find both? I've also seen all black squirrels in Iowa, mostly up in the NE corner of the state, and around Dubuque. And pine squirrels in Wisconin and Ontario. Johnsfolly 1
Johnsfolly Posted September 22, 2020 Posted September 22, 2020 Foxes and grays are common throughout MO. Grays tend to be a bit more locally abundant than the foxes. FishnDave and Terrierman 2
BilletHead Posted September 22, 2020 Posted September 22, 2020 You just had to ask and I had to respond, Sold 97 tails to Mepps. From last season all with an air rifle. Up graded to this one and now am over 50 for this season, Added two more this morning from a sit down behind the shooting sticks. 39 and 29 yards. fishinwrench Posted September 22, 2020 Posted September 22, 2020 You can't beat an airgun if your out for numbers. The boom of a shotgun, or the crack of a rimfire puts a hush on a woodlot for darn near an hour. An airgun makes less noise than a twig snapping. Terrierman, BilletHead and Johnsfolly 3
MoCarp Posted September 22, 2020 Author Posted September 22, 2020 I used to sell tails to mepps....or trade for lures... seems fox squirrels like more open woods, but both are common this side of Branson... they have a few black color phase greys....in southern MN...here you might see and odd ball fox squirrel. buddy has a blonde-ish one mounted....the all white ones are in marionville but they frown on shooting them. always thought of a hunting trip to bag some of those black squirrels and out west aberts squirrels with the ear tufts....even the pine squirrel.... Ryan Miloshewski Posted September 22, 2020 Posted September 22, 2020 I assume like most I cut my teeth squirrel hunting. Still like my .410 if I am actually squirrel hunting. These days it seems I find myself opportunistically plugging them with a .20 or 12 ga. Or undergoing pest removal. Little SOBs destroyed three flower pots this fall. Have a nice batch in the freezer. Urban greys taste just as good as "wild." MoCarp 1 “To those devoid of imagination a blank place on the map is a useless waste; to others, the most valuable part.”--Aldo Leopold
tjm Posted September 22, 2020 Posted September 22, 2020 When I was a kid we had both melanistic fox and greys in McDonald county, in the last 30-40 years I've only seen the black in the greys, and we don't have as many fox squirrels as back in the 50s&60s, I only ever hunted them with .22. MoCarp 1
BilletHead Posted September 22, 2020 Posted September 22, 2020 There are more tree squirrel species in North America then we all realize and a slam for taking those species.
