BilletHead Posted January 24, 2021 Posted January 24, 2021 Because it is true . My main job for last week was find us a hunt for Thursday my partners day off. Made the rounds and found the best of three choices. Choice one had been holding a very few ducks with geese stopping by each day. Two good hunts there already. checked it out. One drake mallard hanging there. Second choice where same thing was going on. 15 mallards there and geese again there off and on all day. Bad deal is it is a busy with traffic next to road. Birds pretty spooky. Choice three was where I had been saving close to home. I hear geese go in and out from the house and knew it was a busy place. Mornings I see canadas converging there everyday. I parked the truck and opened the gate binoculars in hand. Walked to top of hill and peered into the low spot where pond was. What? Mot a goose on the pond? Then I looked a bit closer and in the field there were Canadas stretched out for 200 yards up the hill and 50 or more yards wide. A few got up I couldn't see from behind the dam and landed on the pond. I mean there was so many birds there it made me giddy. Forecast wind out of the south west in the morning I had a plan we would try to execute. First thing I hear when Pat got home is where are we going in the morning. I told her easy hunt. up at 5 am, load everything in truck bed. A dozen floaters and 18 full bodies. Lay out blinds too. Drive right to the spot. We loaded up and drove in. Lowered tailgate and backed right up to dam. Walked right off dam onto tailgate like someone had pushed the easy button. I pitched out the floaters from the dam as Pat set out the layouts. We both put out full bodies on dam and I hid truck. Still 20 minutes before LST gives us a good visit about everything. As the stars disappear and the eastern skies lighten up we hear some in the air. Then we see them. A trio and they pitched right in. I got two and partner got too excited and she tried to pull the trigger with safety on. Hey been there done that no one is perfect.. We had a good laugh retrieved birds and back down in blinds. Not long after that a group of thirty came in no hesitation, when you want to be where they want to be just wait. Little calling the rest is up to the birds. I said hey turn safety off ok and I heard a snap. I shot my one to complete mine as Pat got two. Yea! Retrieve thee three as other birds showing up. Back down quickly I got back in blind when the sky lit up. From four directions here they came and I mean a bunch. as they all go together over our heads it was like a mad dive to see who could hit the water first. Two landed in front of Pat ten foot away in the decoys. I said pick a head please miss the decoys. Boom it was over and in the sky it was chaos. Birds going everywhere with more trying to get in. Picked up shot a picture and as we drove off some came back. I removed all the land marks from the picture . I rendered a quart of fat yesterday. Cut up jerky meat and put in brine this morning. Will jerk it tomorrow or Monday. Maybe get another hunt or two before it ends depending on weather. fishinwrench, ness, Johnsfolly and 10 others 13 "We have met the enemy and it is us", Pogo If you compete with your fellow anglers, you become their competitor, If you help them you become their friend" Lefty Kreh " Never display your knowledge, you only share it" Lefty Kreh "Eat more bass and there will be more room for walleye to grow!" Travis Swift Posted February 2, 2021 Posted February 2, 2021 Just getting back into waterfowl here in kansas this year. I still love to bow hunt deer but i'm falling in love with the waterfowl. It's not the birds that have me so pumped it's the friendships. It's nice to not have to worry about smell, sound etc. We laugh, visit, drink coffee, even made breakfast burrito's one morning. The social aspect is what i'm really digging......i do like the hunting and shooting part to though BilletHead and slothman 2
