The boss doesn't care as long as his stuff gets priority. Up until recently my plan was to continue ratholing money away, buy a piece of property, and build a shop to get my own practice going. But with property and building costs skyrocketing like they are, who knows. The 120 acre farm next to me sold for just under 1 million, decent lots are bringing 10-30k. Not to continue the "woe is me" stuff, but I got dumped last week. That's what started this whole spiral of introspection, mostly as a distraction from the heartbreak, but the fact that my career needs work remains. It may end being the best thing that's ever happened to me, who knows how long I would've stuck around here. SBU has a program in wildlife conservation that I may look into. They're right down the road. Still don't know how serious I am because of the crappy pay and competition. Looking through the program, I already have at least half of the credits needed, really just need a couple chemistry classes and all of the bio stuff. Lucky you. You might think I'm joking but nope. Way better now than after a bad marriage and kids to deal with. MrGiggles 1
MOPanfisher Posted June 16, 2021 Posted June 16, 2021 If you should opt for the Wildlife/Fisheries programs I will tell you that if you are not working for one of the Agencies by your Junior year at the latest you will become another mechanic with a Biology Degree. The hiring programs target college students not graduates. I cant tell you how many graduates or near graduates I have seen applying for GS 4 level jobs, thinking they can work their way up, but it doesn't work that way any more, at least not with the Feds. You have to qualify and then get one of the Intern Level jobs while you are in school and get in that way. And I don't mean to sound condescending but please learn how to write a good resume and application, if necessary brush up on interview skills. The number of terrible resumes I see is amazing. nomolites, Terrierman, tjm and 1 other 2 2
Gavin Posted June 16, 2021 Posted June 16, 2021 Perfect time to take a chance...No wife & kids, and stuck in a job were your employer treats you like a slave...Felt the same way when I chose to leave the USMC at 25. I hope you figure out what is best for you.

It's not looking very good. About the only thing going for it is that it's reasonably accessible. But to earn a STEM BS, get a job that pays not so well, and then have to go back and get Master's just to get anywhere does not seem appealing. Plus you have the competition to get in. OTC requires all students to go through a placement skills (I forget what they call it) course before graduating, need to have an excellent resume and they schedule a mock interview before you can pass it. -Austin

Funny, the main line I remember from boot camp: "Revielle Revielle Revielle! Drop your cocks and grab your socks. Formation in fifteen minutes!". Not a lot of time to monkey dodo, shower and shave and fall in. But that was how it was and so everyone learned how to do it. Gavin 1
