Data analytics, engineering, project management, computer science, information science and technology all pay well and are in high demand. A bachelors in applied math will get you a very good job. A degree in history, communication or English will not get you much. True. Those degrees are also going to cost you 30-60k in tuition alone. What I was getting at is that a bachelor's alone used to set you apart, not anymore since the market is so saturated. -Austin

We are at the point now where a bachelor's will hardly pay for itself under most conditions, but at the same time you pretty much need it just to get an entry level position. You can make excellent money in trades, at the cost of your body. That said, things are a lot better in that regard than they used to be. There's a lot of people out there with degrees that are working retail. 1 hour ago, Terrierman said: Wah. Devan S.
Degree only gets you the first or second job. After that its usually communication and/or networking. Daryk Campbell Sr

My best friend had a history degree from Washington university and he couldn’t get a decent job with it back in the 80’s. He worked right next to me on the assembly line. It’s all about what the degree is. I had another guy I worked with there had a communication degree and he couldn’t find anything better than GM. But let’s talk about possible reasons for the high cost of college… Here’s some admin at UC San Diego:(not kidding) Associate vice chancellor for faculty equity The assistant vice chancellor for diversity Staff Diversity Liason undergraduate student diversity liaison Chief diversity officer The director of development for diversity initiatives Director of the cross cultural center The Director of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender resource center The Director of the women’s center these people are a fraud and making tons of money. They make up problems where little or none exist. But you’re paying for it with your hard earned money. What else are we going to do??? I think you are going to end up just fine. You know something? When you first starting posting about mechanical stuff on here I thought you were much older. Possibly retired. SpoonDog
And football coaches! I get frustrated, too- all this technology to streamline bureaucracy, and it seems like they're the only one's hiring. Too often universities see students as a cash cow, but at least the programs Mitch highlights are directed toward student support. I don't think university staff needs to spend any time manufacturing problems. Women get harassed and assaulted on campus- maybe none of you had to walk a girl back to her car in the dark because some rando waits for her to get off her shift in the bookstore. I think that qualifies as a problem. Students drink themselves to death in dorm rooms, take nosedives off parking garages- to me, those are problems. If universities want to spend my hard-earned dollars hiring staff and developing programs to address these problems, I think it's a better investment than repainting the football field, or decorative brickwork on the quad. Working with a diverse group of folks is part of being competitive in today's job market, whether Mitch likes it or not. Especially for positions requiring degrees. It's easy to hire someone who gets along with everyone over someone who treats female colleagues like garbage. You don't have to like it, or agree with it, or approve of their "lifestyle choice." If you can't act professionally toward your coworkers, there's someone else who can. bfishn
