I think I know what falls to each department as far as administration goes. And of course there is overlap and cooperation in those areas. The concessions I may be clear on. I thought store and lodge were DNR owned and managed through contract concessionaires. Wrench tells me that MDC has the store. so. I think ownership is important when we start the blame for the Park's condition. I suspect there are situations in which neither Dept has clear responsibility. And I suspect some of the employees don't know which is who. I know that at RRSP park employees have given me misinformation numerous times. The State of Missouri owns the land, its a State Park. The concession is sublet by the DNR and the State thru a bid process. DNR manages the Parks part. The fishery is managed by the MDC which is also part of the State. The overall reason for the parks condition is the management by the State. If you have a concern, your State Rep or Senate would be the good first step. If you are worried about the poor quality of the fish or the conditions of the stream, then MDC would be the contact. DNR plays a part in the stream and its banks as they are part of the DNR. Lucky, there is not a Federal part of Bennett that I am aware of. They have control of the Scenic Riverways and NFS systems, which over lap the State in some parts of Missouri, causing more confusion. Bottom line is they all get paid from our tax dollars, both State and Federal. fishinwrench Posted February 5, 2022 Posted February 5, 2022 It's confusing. Not all state parks with hunting/fishing access are listed by the MDC as places to hunt/fish. But Bennett Spring and Montauk are. There's a lake up North (name escapes me at the moment) that is a state park run by the DNR.....but MDC has nothing to do with it. It has special regulations that are not even mentioned in the Wildlife Code book.

Local cities have let them take over stocking of their ponds and then they regulate the put and take of the fish. Some parks do it themselves and buy private fish, then regulate. Some parks allow MDC to build a ramp on a stream for river access only. fishinwrench 1 "Life has become immeasurably better since I have been forced to stop taking it seriously." — Hunter S. Thompson
tjm Posted February 5, 2022 Posted February 5, 2022 I'm surprised that any State Park allows hunting, even with special regulations. Although I do recall something one time about a managed deer hunt in BSSP, at the time I wasn't intersected so don't recall details, is that an ongoing thing now? Do they allow other hunting in that park? I'd try to find out why MDC has nothing to do with regulating the fishing in any waters owned by the state , if you had the name of that lake. It says on the State Park website under laws and regulations as applies to all parks "No hunting or discharging of firearms is permitted." I know the DNR guys that I've talked to in the past have been emphatically anti-hunting/trapping and barely tolerant of fishing. Gave the impression that parks should be used only as hiking/bird watching areas. Years ago when I asked via email about fishing access to Big Sugar through the Park, the reply was that fishing was not allowed in that Park. In talking with employees of both departments it seems the two agencies are at odds over consumptive use.
awhuber Posted February 5, 2022 Posted February 5, 2022 Current River State park allows hunting for small game in season for anyone and deer and turkey by draw. CRSP was sold to DNR by the MDC and that was a deed restriction on the property. 42 minutes ago, tjm said: I'm surprised that any State Park allows hunting, even with special regulations. I wish I could remember. A temporary girlfriend heard about it and we looked it up online and was going to check it out....but never did. I wanna say that it was north of Long Branch. There were pics of it online (that looked really nice) and information about the special regs that were different from the normal statewide regs. That's why I looked in the Wildlife Code, but there was no mention of it at all in there. I remember there being sailboats on the lake in the pics. I'm not too sure that we didn't have a big boy scout jamboree there when I was a kid. tjm 1
fishinwrench Posted February 5, 2022 Posted February 5, 2022 It's driving me crazy. I'm about to message her and see if she remembers what it is called. We're on good terms..... but her husband probably won't like it. 😂 Foghorn 1
bfishn Posted February 5, 2022 Posted February 5, 2022 Sounds like Forest Lake in Thousand Hills State Park. Used to have our annual end-of-school picnics there. Lots of Boone & Crockets records set near there too. fishinwrench 1 I can't dance like I used to.
