Maybe.  Certainly some 2 and even 3 times.

Yes, I had at least  7 or 8...maybe a dozen... gar strike and briefly on the line.  Even had a couple out of the water, but didn't "land" any of them.

I changed to a different fly that has hooked and landed gar for me in the past.  Woolly Bugger. DID get some gar landed yesterday evening!  

Also caught a couple small White Bass:

I had some gar take the bugger Saturday morning,  but could not keep them on.  Kind of best of both worlds.   I didn't have to remove them from the water and got a good fight on the fly rod.

           Yes Daryk they are a hoot on the fly. Just ask @grizwilson what he thought of it

Uncle and his friends used to fish for gar with a 6-8" piece of frayed nylon rope and teeth tangle them. I wonder if a fly rod model of that rope couldn't be made with frayed Bonnie Braid?
